Dutchmen's Season Ends In Heartbreaking Fashion In ECAC Semifinals

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Top-seeded Lebanon Valley's valiant, come-from-behind effort fell agonizingly short in the semifinal round of the ECAC South championship tournament on Saturday, Nov. 15.  Despite an effort that showed tremendous resolve and plenty of heart, the Flying Dutchmen's 2014 campaign came to an end when they fell to McDaniel, the tourney's #5 seed, in penalty kicks.

After the Green Terror scored twice in the game's first 16 minutes, LVC rallied to score twice in the second half, including an electrifying equalizer by sophomore Sammy Bost with just 1:46 left in regulation.  Unfortunately, the Blue and White failed to score in either of the two overtime periods and dropped a 3-1 PK decision to the visitors.

McDaniel struck first when Paolo Rosa gathered a Katie Kirschenmann offering from the left side of the field and struck her attempt off the right post and across the goal line in the seventh minute.  Kirschenmann got into the scoring act when she made a move around an LVC defender and created enough space to fire her shot into the right side of the Dutchmen net with 28:37 left in the first half.

Following a sluggish start, Lebanon Valley turned it up after the break.  The home team outshot the Green Terror 19-3 in the second half and outworked the visitors on nearly every 50/50 ball.  That effort paid dividends when freshman Meghan Ross corralled an outlet pass from sophomore Mackenzie Murray, raced past two McDaniel backs and netted her eighth goal of the year in the 67th minute.

LVC continued to outplay their opponents as the game wore down but struggled to put anything past Green Terror goalkeeper Sarah McDonald.  Finally, after two great looks from Ross and junior Rachel Cummings that failed to find twine, senior captain Amanda Douglass crossed a perfectly placed pass from the left side of the field that Bost was able to finish off in front in the 88th minute.  The score was Bost's team-best 20th of the season.

With momentum now squarely in their corner, the Dutchmen continued to dominate both OTs.  The Blue and White got off six total shots in the extra sessions compared to just two by McDaniel.  But again, LVC struggled to put one on frame.

McDonald shined in the shootout as she made stops on three of Lebanon Valley's four penalty kicks.  McDaniel netted its first, third, and fourth attempts to earn a hard-fought victory and secure a spot in the ECAC South championship game on Sunday afternoon.

Lebanon Valley finishes the year with a 15-5-1 overall record; a win-total good enough to earn the 2014 squad a share of the program record for most victories in a single season.

Arcadia defeated Wilkes 1-0 in the second ECAC semfinal matchup of the day.  The Knights' Kayla Haberbosch scored the game-winner off an assist from Lennon Kramer.  Arcadia, the tourney's #2 seed, will take on the Green Terror for all the marbles tomorrow at 1 p.m.
