ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley sophomore
Sammy Bost netted her biggest goal of the season five minutes into overtime to lift the Flying Dutchmen past a pesky Albright squad at Herbert Field in the team's 2014 Commonwealth Conference opener on Tuesday evening, Oct. 7.
After falling behind early and being shut out for 87 minutes, freshman
Meghan Ross converted the equalizer with 2:17 remaining in regulation and pushed the contest to an extra session.
Despite finding chances few and far between, the visitors got on the board first when they reversed field following an LVC attack and caught the Dutchmen thin on the back end. Crissy Terraces found Emily Sousa on an outlet and the Lions' leading-scorer did the rest, striking a tough ball into the top right corner of Lebanon Valley's net in the 25th minute.
The home team regrouped and outplayed Albright for nearly the entire game, earning lopsided advantages in total shots (36-2), shots on goal (17-2), and corner kicks (11-2). Late in regulation, the team's aggressive offensive approach finally paid off.
In the early going, LVC's attempts were fast and furious but Albright goalkeeper Jaymee Stepp was forced to do little more than catch the ball as nearly every Dutchmen attempt seemed to find her directly. In crunch time, however, Lebanon Valley took advantage when needed most and found the twine twice in an eight minute span.
After driving towards the left corner of the Albright box, sophomore defender
Kristin Robeson lofted a ball towards the Lion frame. Her offering hit the crossbar but deflected straight down to a waiting Ross who finished off the play in close, tying the game and rejuvenating a frustrated offense.
In overtime, it was all Lebanon Valley as the Dutchmen allowed Albright past midfield just once and got off two shots before Bost ended things. The team's leading-scorer gathered a ball and made a move to free herself of two Lion defenders before hammering home her eighth goal of the year from just inside the visitors' box to send the Dutchmen into a joyous frenzy.
LVC's back line was outstanding all game long as the group consisting of Robeson, freshman
Emmie Santoleri, junior
Alexa Muffly, freshman
Taylor Kleeschulte, and sophomore
Sam Wright prevented the Lions from taking a single shot in the game's final 64 minutes.
The victory improved Lebanon Valley to 9-1-1 on the season and was the team's fifth straight win. More importantly, it gave the Dutchmen a valuable conference victory. With the team off to one of the best starts in program history, their latest win sets up a showdown with Commonwealth rival Messiah, the #2 team in the nation, in the squad's next outing. The contest with the Falcons is the team's homecoming game and will go a long way towards sorting out the league's standings. Kickoff at Herbert Field is set for 12 p.m.
