Dutchmen Battle To Draw With Alvernia

READING, Pa. – Lebanon Valley and Commonwealth Conference foe Alvernia fought to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 18.  Freshman Tyler Skye accounted for the Flying Dutchmen's lone goal of the contest.

The Crusaders struck first when Devin Wilt popped a shot over the head of LVC freshman goalkeeper Cam Avery off a through ball from Sam Hart to put the home team ahead in the 42nd minute.

After being held scoreless for over 80 minutes, the Dutchmen finally broke through when Skye netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season on a rebound attempt after his initial shot was blocked by Alvernia goalkeeper Zach Rider. Freshman Austin Freeman assisted on the equalizer in the 81st minute.

LVC got off two shots in the extra sessions, one from junior Curtis Washburn and one by sophomore Ian McGinnis, but both attempts sailed wide. The Crusaders attempted three shots during the overtime periods but none were on target.

Avery played well in the defensive struggle and made six saves on the afternoon, including two at close range in the second overtime to save the point. The Dutchmen were outshot 14-10 overall and 8-4 in the shots on goal category.

The tie was Lebanon Valley's second of the season and their first in conference play. The Dutchmen are now 5-7-2 on the year and 1-2-1 in league play. LVC will look to reverse the team's recent three-game winless streak when they host Commonwealth opponent Widener on Wednesday evening, Oct. 22.  Kickoff at Herbert Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
