CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Lebanon Valley women's volleyball team dropped its first match of the season in heartbreaking style, falling 3-2 to Nazareth College in the Cortland Red Dragon Classic on Friday afternoon.
The Valley won the second and fourth sets by a 25-19 and 25-22 margin, respectively. Nazareth took the first set, 25-22, the third set, 25-18, and the fifth set, 15-13.
LVC racked up the stats from the hitting department as three players tallied double-digit kills. Junior Kayla Confer led the team with 17 kills, while freshman Greta Weidemoyer and senior Sarah Godfrey tallied 13 and 10, respectively.
Defensively, junior Kacey Musselman picked up 17 digs and sophomore Emily Sides recorded 12. Behind the service line, freshman Morgan Webb and senior Jess Finlayson posted three aces apiece, while Sides and freshman Rachel Moltz each had two aces.
"Although we lost, I really think we played well in this match and it was a good way to start the season," head coach Wayne Perry said. "We came from behind a number of times so I'm really pleased with the group's performance."
LVC came out with a vengeance in the second match of the evening, taking it handily in three sets, 25-17, 25-22, and 25-20. The Valley still had to dig deep in this match, however, as they came back from a seven-point deficit in the second set to tie it at 21 and go on to eventually win that set and the final for the victory.
The Dutchmen shined defensively in the second match as Finlayson picked up 21 digs in just three sets, while Musselman helped out with 14 digs of her own. Confer led the side in kills again with nine, while Musselman and Weidemoyer added eight and five of their own. Weidemoyer also added two solo blocks and one assist block to her stats.
From the service line, Weidemoyer continued her stellar performance with five service aces. Additionally, Godfrey, Webb, and Sides all contributed two aces each.
LVC volleyball is back in action tomorrow with two more matches in the Cortland Red Dragon Classic. The Valley will take on Fredonia State at 11 a.m. and Baruch at 4 p.m.
