Drexel University 4, Lebanon Valley College 3

HERSHEY, Pa. - Despite outshooting the Dragons 35-32 in the contest, the Lebanon Valley ice hockey could not climb back from an early deficit, falling to Drexel on Friday evening, 4-3.

The Dutchmen started out strong in the first period possessing the most opportunities to score. At the 10:13 mark of the period, Klayton Garman found the back of the net for the Dutchmen off assists from Joey LaBonte and Andy Thurby.

It didn't take long, however, for the Dragons to respond as their next possession tied the game up at 1-1 off an unassisted shorthanded goal by Steve Villa and Drexel took the lead off of a Max Stetson powerplay goal later in the period. Sophomore goalie Colin Catherman had seven saves in the period and Drexel's Adam Birmingham had 13 saves for the Dragons.

The second period started very similar to the first as the Dutchmen came out possessing a majority of the chances early trying to find the equalizer. At the 12:53 mark, the Dutchmen were able to find the goal they needed as Garman found the net again for his second of the evening, assisted by PJ Hefferin and Thurby his second assist of the night. The Dutchmen, however, were unable to keep the Dragons scoreless in the period as Ryan Williams scored from a Gagliardi assist. Catherman made 11 saves during the period while facing 12 shots, and Birmingham saved 9 shots while facing ten.

The Dutchmen played a hard and physical third period, but it was too little too late. The Dragons were able to extend their lead by two off a goal by Nick Lombardi, assisted by Tyler Woyshner. The Dutchmen pulled the game to one off a late unassisted goal by Thurby, but could not manage to score again. Catherman made 26 saves on 30 shots, while Birmingham posted 32 saves off 35 shots.

The Dutchmen will travel to Drexel tomorrow for a 7:45 p.m. puck drop.
