ANNVILLE, Pa. -
Lyndee Sheaffer's second-half gamewinner pushed Lebanon Valley to its fifth straight win, edging Widener 2-1 in Commonwealth Conference play.
The Dutchmen (8-6, 4-0 CC) outshot the Pride (4-10, 0-3 CC) by a deceptive 20-9 margin, but Widener threatened to the end with several scoring chances late in the game that put LVC on its heels.
Lauren Brumbach scored LVC's first goal to open the second half, and Sheaffer potted the winner in the 49th minute after Widener's Hannah Robinson had tied the game.
The first half proved frustrating for Lebanon Valley, which outshot Widener 13-2 in the period but couldn't find a goal despite a hit crossbar by Brumbach and
Lauren Grauer's post. The Pride had two defensive saves in the first half, as well, to keep the scoreline blank at halftime.
Brumbach and
Kristen Garman teamed up for a give-and-go on a penalty corner to get on the board, with Brumbach finishing on a hard shot from the left for her seventh goal of the year in the 40th minute. Robinson leveled for the visitors less than four minutes later, converting Meghan Garvey's centering feed, but Sheaffer put the Valley ahead with the finish to a superb centering pass by
Megan Harris at 48:43.
The Dutchmen then had to stop a series of three corners and three shots by Widener in the final four minutes, but
Chloe Baro made two of her five saves during the sequence to preserve the win.
Maggie Karmeris had nine stops for Widener. LVC led 9-7 on corners.
LVC will travel to face Messiah on Saturday afternoon.
