Lebanon Valley 6, Alvernia 3
READING, Pa. -
Cate Cusack's four goals powered Lebanon Valley to a 6-3 win over Alvernia in the Commonwealth Conference opener on Saturday.
The Dutchmen (4-4, 1-0 CC) outshot the Crusaders (3-5, 0-1 CC) by a 22-15 margin, but the game wasn't safe until the end of the game when Cusack hit twice in the final four minutes.
Cusack continued her hot form against the Crusaders; she scored twice against them last season, and also had two goals on Alvernia's field against Stevens Tech in the ECAC Mid-Atlantic quarterfinals. Her four goals were a career high.
Bridget Monighan and
Lauren Brumbach also added goals for LVC, and Cait Vasey had three assists. Brumbach also had a first-half penalty stroke saved by Erin Wunsch.
Lauren Guido scored twice for Alvernia, and Summer Liberto added the other.
Guido opened the game at 7:07, cleaning up a rebound, but Monighan scored off a corner play with Vasey two minutes later to tie it 1-1.
Cusack put LVC ahead with her first at 14:33 from
Mandi Albright, but Liberto answered back with an unassisted talley at 19:09.
LVC took control around halftime, first as Cusack potted her second before the break and Brumbach scored off Vasey's corner hit. Guido made it a 4-3 game in the 44th minute and Alvernia kept up the pressure, but Cusack put the game out of reach with a breakaway at 66:24, then scored again 45 seconds later from
Kelsey Miller.
Chloe Baro made eight saves to earn the win, and
Cassie Wallen had a stop in relief. Wunsch had 12 saves in the loss.
LVC will visit Swarthmore on Thursday.
