READING, Pa. -
Hana Krechel's school-record nine goals paced Lebanon Valley to an important Commonwealth Conference win as they beat Alvernia, 18-12, on the road on Saturday.
The Dutchmen (7-5, 2-1 CC) gained a bit of revenge over the Crusaders (7-5, 1-1 CC), who beat them in the MAC tournament quarterfinals last season. LVC led 8-4 at the break thanks to some superb defense, but the second half turned into a shootout that the Dutchmen won thanks to a late 5-0 run.
Krechel shredded Alvernia's defense for nine goals and an assist on 15 shots while
Bailey Benz added four goals, including three in the second half. LVC overcame a significant 21-11 draw control disadvantage thanks to 14 combined saves by
Erica Ameigh and
Corinne Palombo. The Dutchmen led 32-30 on shots.
Allison Bainbridge led Alvernia with four goals, and Samantha Landis had a pair with seven draw controls.
Mel Modrick scored the game's first goal, and the sides went back and forth to 3-3 before a four-goal spurt - with three straight by Krechel and another from
Allison McGinniss - put LVC up 7-3 midway through the first half on the way to an 8-4 lead at the break.
Both offenses were more active in the second half as Alvernia started out on a 3-1 run. The hosts kept the lead around two goals, eventually cutting it to 13-11 with a pair of Bainbridge scores, but LVC found a decisive 5-0 run as Benz and Krechel scored twice each and
Taylor Kruter tacked a goal on to take an 18-11 lead that Alvernia couldn't recover from.
Ameigh had four first-half saves; Palombo came up big with 10 stops in the second half as Alvernia took 19 shots in the period.
The Dutchmen host Albright on Wednesday.
