CORTLAND, N.Y. - Lebanon Valley worked two five-set victories over tough opponents, beating 2010 NCAA participants Ithaca and Richard Stockton 3-2 to win the Gold Pool of the Cortland Red Dragon Tournament on Saturday.
The Dutchmen (3-1) were led by all-tournament pick
Jamie Hawk, who had a tremendous all-around weekend that included a 24-kill match against Stockton and a 13-kill, six-block, three-ace performance against Ithaca.
Both Ithaca, the 2010 champion of the Empire 8, and Stockton, the NJAC champion, were NCAA participants last year, and the LVC-Ithaca pairing was a rematch of the 2010 NCAA First Round.
Against Ithaca, the two sides traded sets, but superb play at the net by LVC helped secure the win as the Dutchmen registered 11 team blocks, led by five block assists and a solo stuff by Hawk and
Sarah Godfrey's five block assists.
Hawk had 13 kills to lead the team, with
Kayla Confer and
Krystal Wirey each throwing down 11.
Angela Kuperavage led with 24 digs, and Kasey Musselman had 42 assists and 17 digs.
The Dutchmen had to rally from a 2-1 deficit against Stockton, led again by Hawk who had 24 kills and hit .359. Godfrey added 10 kills, and Confer also had eight.
Solid serving was the key in LVC's comeback, led by
Kellsie Groff's four aces and a great serving stretch by Confer.
LVC visits Moravian on Wednesday night.
