LEBANON, Pa. - Cross country racing made its debut at Union Canal Tunnel Park Saturday with the 39th annual Lebanon Valley College Invitational making its debut at its new home.

LVC's men finished seventh with 179 points, and the women were fifth with 165 points. #11 Elizabethtown walked away with the men's team title and #7 Johns Hopkins the women's, while Annville-Cleona took the boys' championship and Central York the girls'.

Messiah's Tyler Newhook won the men's collegiate race in 15:57, with Johns Hopkins' Holly Clarke winning the collegiate women in 18:42. In the high school races, Annville-Cleona had a top-two sweep with Mark Bachman (17:03) and Shawn Wolfe (17:11), while Central York had all three top girls' finishers led by Megan Lundy (21:34). All races were run at 5K distance due to flooding shutting down part of the course's 8K loop.

The LVC men placed seventh overall, led by freshman Andy Goelz's 20th-place 16:44 in his collegiate debut and a 23rd-place 16:53 from Eliott Bonds. Nick D'Angelo was 26th in 16:59 to finish a solid top-three cluster for the Dutchmen, and freshman Mike Harnish (52nd, 17:40) and Patrick Tierney (58th, 17:48) finished out the scoring.

"With a few minor tweaks we have the ability to put out a very strong team this year," said head coach James O'Brien '07. "The adjusted course is much shorter than what we have been preparing for and I think we might have fared better at the 8K distance today. Our front three ran well to remain in contact with each other and they have a lot of potential to finish strongly in the MAC this season.  Mike is still very new to running cross country and he has been improving leaps and bounds every week as well. We're anxious to approach the 8K distance at Misericordia next weekend to see how we stack up."

On the women's side, the Dutchmen were fifth despite holding out several top runners, paced by Cynthia Adams' seventh-place 19:30. Alyssa Miller came in 30th in 20:47, finishing just ahead of freshman Dana Stockdale in 32nd (20:48). Victoria Broderick (45th, 21:46.22) and Tiff Frederick (51st, 22:04) were the fourth and fifth scorers.

"Today was a solid opener for us against some stiff competition," O'Brien said. "Finishing fifth against this field in our first race of the season while holding out our number two bodes well for where we are at in our training. Cynthia ran a strong race to lead us up front. Alyssa and Dana worked together throughout the race and this was a huge performance for Dana as a freshman.  Victoria had the race of her career to date, we're very excited about where she is at and this was the first time since her freshman year in early October that she has factored into our scoring.  She has come a long way.  Lastly, Tiff closed strongly to finish out our scoring."

Among notable alumni finishes, Lauren Johnson '11 was 46th overall in the women's field and a large men's alumni group was led by current assistant coach Chris Bauer '09, who was 78th, and Brad Sweigart '11, who was 82nd.
