CORTLAND, N.Y. – Lebanon Valley volleyball opened the 2010 season with two victories on the first day of the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Classic. The Dutchmen started with a 3-0 (28-26, 28-26, 25-20) win over SUNY New Paltz before sweeping Baptist Bible 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-21) Friday evening. With the two victories, LVC advanced to the championship round of the tournament.
Against SUNY New Paltz, a fellow NCAA championship participant last season, senior
Emily Perkins registered 36 setting assists. The team notched numerous kills, with seniors
Michelle Little and
Emily Hopkins leading the way with 10 each. Classmate
Joelle Snyder added eight and
Jess Raber recorded seven kills.
Junior
Angela Kuperavage led the team with 14 digs, while Perkins added 11 and Little had 10 in the match. Snyder tallied three assists and Raber had two. With a balanced attack, LVC served tough down the stretch to record the victory.
In the second match of the day, the Dutchmen posted a 3-0 win (25-11, 25-12, 25-21) over Baptist Bible. The team spread kills across the board, with freshman
Megan Schoch and Hopkins posting a team-best eight kills each. Barra added six in the win.
Leading the way in digs was Kuperavage with 12 and junior
Stephanie Derk with eight. Junior
Jamie Hawk posted a team-high three solo and one assist blocks in the match. Schoch and Raber added a solo block each.
LVC will face Rochester, group C winner, at noon on Saturday in the Championship Round on the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Classic. Rochester won both of their matches on the first day by a 3-1 score.
