MBB Ends Season With A Win At Alvernia

Box Score

READING, Pa. - Senior Dan Dunkelberger grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds to go with 14 points to lead Lebanon Valley past Alvernia, 76-70, on in the season finale Saturday.

The Dutchmen (11-14, 7-7 CC) were technically still alive in the Commonwealth Conference playoff race heading into the weekend but needed help in all three of the other games to sneak into the field of four. LVC got that help with wins by Messiah and Lycoming, but Elizabethtown's victory over Arcadia shut the door on Lebanon Valley's hopes.

LVC turned in the single greatest foul-shooting performance in program history as they went a perfect 18-for-18 at the stripe. Dunkelberger, playing in his final career game, turned in his fifth double-double out of the last six games, including going 10-for-10 at the line, as he became the first Dutchman to record 20 boards since Darren Pugh '03 had 22 against Delaware Valley during the 2002-03 season. LVC dominated the glass in the game, 45-28.

Joe Meehan led LVC with 19 points, and Sean MacIntosh (14) and Grant Becker (12) also wound up in double figures. Seth Cornell led all scorers with 24 for Alvernia, including the Crusaders' (15-10, 6-8 CC) final six points as they tried to mount a late comeback.

A tight first half saw Alvernia lead by a basket at the half, but LVC quickly took control in the second with a 7-2 run to start the half. The Crusaders erased the lead and went on top with a Cornell fastbreak bucket at the 13:19 mark, but that would be their final lead fo the game as a Dunkelberger three-point play and Meehan's jumper wrested the lead for good.

The Crusaders kept it close, however, getting within two when Cornell sank a pair of free throws with 1:45 left, but LVC was automatic as MacIntosh went 6-for-6 at the line in the final minute to hang on.
