SCRANTON, Pa. - The LVC volleyball team pushed its winning streak to 17 straight matches with a pair of wins Saturday, beating the host University of Scranton 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23, 15-9) before besting Gallaudet University, 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18).
The red-hot Dutchmen (28-2, 5-0 CC) used a total team effort as they are now within a win of tying the program and school record for most wins in a season, held by the 2002 squad that went 29-12.
Against Scranton, LVC turned it around in the fourth set, leading the entire way before squeeking out a 25-23 win. In the fifth, it was 8-7 LVC at the turn before Scranton tied it 9-9, but the Dutchmen hit a 6-0 run to take the set, 15-9.
Emily Hopkins keyed LVC in the hard-fought win over Scranton, throwing down a career-high 24 kills.
Joelle Snyder and
Michelle Little also pitched in 13 and 12 kills, respectively, and
Jamie Hawk was 8-for-16 with no errors.
Erin Yost added 56 assists and 16 digs, and
Brandi Roth matched her career-high with 26 digs.
Against a tall Gallaudet team, the Dutchmen relied on solid defense as Yost dug out 18 balls and Roth and
Christa Vrabel each got under 17.
Snyder had 16 kills and a pair of aces, and
Nicole Barra hit 13. Little added 11 swings. Yost put up 43 assists and two aces to go with her defensive total.
LVC will close out its Commonwealth Conference schedule at fellow unbeaten Elizabethtown College Wednesday at 7 p.m. The winner will receive the #1 seed in the playoffs.
