ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley College was tested, but held on to beat Messiah College in three, 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-20) in a Commonwealth Conference match on Wednesday.
The Dutchmen (26-2, 5-0 CC) won for the 16th outing in a row, and clinched at least a home game in the CC playoffs. The win sets up a big match with Elizabethtown (5-0 CC) on Oct. 29 to determine the regular-season champion.
Joelle Snyder led LVC with 11 kils, and Emily Hopkins added 10. Michelle Little had a solid all-arouind game with six kills, nine digs, and three aces, while Brandi Roth led defensively with 14 digs.
Amy Mattie paced Messiah with seven kills and 15 digs.
A hard-fought first set went to extras after neither team led by more than three throughout. With the match at 25 all, LVC finally gained the upper hand after Brynn Lettieri's service error and a big kill by Snyder to close out the set.
The second set was also a see-saw affair as LVC had to come back from an early 6-1 deficit. LVC pulled even and eventually hit a 4-0 run to go up 23-19 before the Falcons brought it back to 23-22. Two swings from Hopkins and Little, however, put the win away for LVC.
The Dutchmen had little trouble in the third as they pulled away at the end for the win.
LVC will visit the University of Scranton this Saturday for a tri-match along with Gallaudet.
