Susquehanna Tops Men's Soccer, 2-1

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley College scored the game's opening goal but Susquehanna University answered with two as LVC fell, 2-1, in men's soccer action Wednesday.

LVC (6-4) fell for the second straight game. The Crusaders (6-2-1) doubled up LVC's shots, 16-8, on the unseasonably hot afternoon.

Sophomore Travis Steedle opened the scoring in the eighth minute when he found space on the right and made a run on goal. His shot from an angle beat goalkeeper Matt Glackin and put LVC up 1-0.

Susquehanna answered quickly when Rhyan Nelson took Eric Baltimore's pass at the spot and buried it for the equalizer at 14:55. Matt Gawlas hit the gamewinner less than three minutes later, scoring right in front of net off Nelson's cross.

The Dutchmen nearly got a second in the 20th minute, but senior Zach Barkus' laser was stopped by a diving Glackin.

Both teams had quality chances in the second half, perhaps none better than Jim Robertiello's shot for the Crusaders in the 74th minute that junior Tim Mehl had to kick save out of the box.

LVC pressed, but simply couldn't generate offense, taking two shots in the second half. Susquehanna, not content to sit on a one-goal lead, took nine shots in the second.

The Crusaders held a wide 7-1 lead in corners. Both Mehl and Glackin made five saves.

LVC will face a tough test Saturday, heading to No. 3 Messiah College at 7 p.m. for their Commonwealth Conference opener.
