Women's Soccer Edges Ursinus, 1-0

ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Lebanon Valley College women's soccer team used outstanding defense to overcome an offensive-minded Ursinus College, 1-0, Thursday at Herbert Field.

The Flying Dutchmen (8-4) got the game's lone goal early in the second half from senior Kristen Hoover to top the Bears (7-2-2).

LVC has played in 10 one-goal games already this season, setting a program record. The Dutchmen are 6-4 in those games.

Ursinus controlled the tempo for much of the game, outshooting the Dutchmen 15-6, including 9-3 in the first half. LVC played some excellent defense, as junior goalkeeper Erika Ely made five saves and got to several crosses to earn the clean sheet.

Ursinus had a great chance in the 29th minute when Jess Gunzelman rifled a shot from 10 yards out that Ely tipped over the bar.

The Bears threatened again with less than a minute to go in the half as Alex Shivers shot a laser just wide from the top of the box.

Hoover caught the Ursinus defense by surprise early in the second half, receiving the ball 20 yards out and lofting it high over keeper Lisa Clark at 49:58.

Lebanon Valley clamped down for the rest of the game even as Ursinus picked up the pace, but the Bears never managed to find the equalizer.

Clark made four saves for Ursinus. The Bears took eight corners and Lebanon Valley none.

LVC will hosts its Alumni Game Saturday at 11 a.m. and return to varsity action Tuesday, hosting Moravian at 4 p.m.
