ANNVILLE, Pa. – In a battle of two teams ranked in the top-10 nationally, No. 2 Messiah College scored 47 seconds into the second overtime to come away with a 4-3 win over No. 10 Lebanon Valley Saturday afternoon at the LVC Field Hockey Stadium.
Tiffany Leatherman scored the game-winner for the Falcons, who held off a late Lebanon Valley rally.
Messiah (7-0, 2-0 CC) led 3-1 with 29:47 left following Lindsey Hunter's second goal of the game before LVC came back with a pair of late goals to send the contest into overtime. Junior Shauna Enck scored on an assist from freshman Avery Carter with 15:19 left before freshman Danielle Blase took a feed from junior Mimi Sullivan and tied it up with 1:49 showing to make it a 3-3 game.
Neither team could find the back of the cage in the first 15-minute bonus session, with the Dutchwomen out-shooting the Falcons 7-1.
Lebanon Valley (4-1, 0-1 CC) took an early 1-0 lead when Sullivan accepted a pass from senior Mallary Anderson and potted her third goal of the season with 24:02 left in the first half. But Messiah scored a pair of goals over the rest of the period to forge a 2-1 lead at the break.
Ashley Mowery made 13 saves to earn the win in the cage for the Falcons while senior Katie Pawlewicz stopped eights shots for the Valley.
Lebanon Valley returns to action on Tuesday, when it visits Dickinson College at 4:30 p.m.
