Sanders Tosses Shutout as Baseball Concludes Season

Game 1 Box Score  Game 2 Box Score

READING, Pa. – Sophomore Matt Sanders threw a four-hit shutout in the opener and Lebanon Valley split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Albright on Sunday afternoon in the Flying Dutchmen's season finale.

Lebanon Valley (19-16, 9-12 CC) won the first game 5-0 before Albright (16-20, 10-11 CC) captured the nightcap 6-0 behind a no-hitter from freshman Jordan Boyer.

The Dutchmen finished the season in sixth place in the Commonwealth Conference while posting its first overall winning record since going 26-19 in 2002. Albright finished fifth in the conference standings.

Sanders (2-3) retired the first five batters he faced and did not yield a hit before No. 9 hitter Kyle Wenrich singled with one out in the third. Wenrich stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Sanders escaped with a groundout and strikeout. The Lions failed to advance beyond second base the rest of the game, as Sanders scattered three singles en route to his second collegiate shutout. He walked one and struck out five.

Lebanon Valley took a 1-0 lead in the third, then broke the game open with a three-run fourth. In the third, senior second baseman Scott Montgomery singled and scored on a wild pitch. Then in the fourth, sophomore catcher Richard Schwartz, senior first baseman Craig Denlinger, and sophomore centerfielder Dan Kelly each ripped an RBI-single.

Schwartz capped the Valley's scoring with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Dan Johnson (4-4) suffered the loss for Albright, giving up four runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out four.

Montgomery finished 3-for-4 with two runs in the opener for LVC while freshman shortstop John Mentzer was 2-for-4.

In the second game, the Lions scored one run on two hits in the first against Lebanon Valley starter Taylor Sgrignoli to supply Boyer with all the offense he would need. Sgrignoli pitched extremely well from the second through the fifth, however, yielding only three baserunners and one hit. But the Lions found their swing in the sixth, and put the game away with a five-run, four-hit inning.

Boyer (3-3) allowed six LVC baserunners but was the beneficiary of two inning-ending double plays. He walked one and struck out one.

Junior Brian McFarlane threw an inning of scoreless relief for the Dutchmen.
