Field Hockey Falls to Ursinus in Road Opener

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – After opening the season with three straight wins, the No. 5 LVC field hockey team lost its first game of the year Thursday afternoon, as No. 19 Ursinus College shut out the Valley 5-0.

Ursinus, which competed at the Division I level as an associate member of the Patriot League last season, improved to 3-1 on the season.

The Bears needed just 5:33 to get on the scoreboard, when Eden Swick scored unassisted. Crystal McCarney and Amy Midgley posted back-to-back goals over a 5:01 span late in the first half to take a commanding 3-0 lead into halftime. LVC took six shots in the opening half against Ursinus keeper Nicole Monatesti.

The Dutchmen held off Ursinus for nearly 10 minutes at the start of the second half before Jess Shellaway slipped in a shot to make it 4-0. Amanda Young became the fifth different Bear to score when she found the back of the cage with 8:17 left. Ursinus out-shot LVC 12-5 in the second half and 22-11 for the game.

First-year student Carla Reavis (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) stopped a season-high 15 shots in goal for the Valley. Monatesti made four saves and shared the shutout with JoAnne Barbieri, who came up with two saves.

LVC returns home on Saturday, when it will continue its non-conference schedule against Swarthmore at noon in the LVC Field Hockey Stadium.
