GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Bethan Cohee and
Molly Whisler combined for 14 points to lead the Lebanon Valley women's lacrosse team to a 22-3 victory over host Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon in Gwynedd Valley.
The Flying Dutchmen (6-3) scored three times in the first three minutes, and Whisler scored three of her five first-half goals in the first 11 minutes.
Kamille Bagapuro won the opening draw control, and Whisler was fouled to earn a free position shot. She converted the shot for the first goal of the game. The senior scored a minute later as Cohee found her open over the middle of the field. It didn't take long for the Dutchmen to increase the lead to 3-0 as Cohee scored off a pass from Bagapuro with LVC playing a woman-up.
The Griffins played aggressively, earning two more cards in a span of 25 seconds. Whisler had a shot saved before the Griffins controlled the ball to kill off the penalties. Cohee and Whisler had shots saved before
Kyla Hebert made it 4-0 with a free-position goal. LVC maintained possession of the ball over the next four minutes and added three goals in the process. Cohee and Whisler connected for the second time before Cohee had back-to-back assists to
Elizabeth Morgan. The Griffins got on the scoreboard with a woman-up goal before the quarter ended to cut the deficit to 7-1 after the first 15 minutes.
LVC came out firing to begin the second quarter, scoring on four consecutive shots over the first five minutes. Hebert started the scoring off another assist by Cohee with 12:41 to play in the half. Whisler scored her fourth goal less than a minute later as
Katie DeWitt recorded the assist on the play. DeWitt added another assist as she connected with
Annelise Shack about 30 seconds later. Whisler scored her fifth goal of the game, and Cohee added her sixth assist to put the Dutchmen up 11-1 with 10:22 on the clock.
Hannah Schneider had a shot saved while Whisler put a shot wide. The defense forced two failed clears by the Griffins. Bagapuro hit the post with just under six minutes left. GMU had two chances to score in the final five minutes as a free position shot went wide, and then
Gigi Ditsky saved a shot. DeWitt gave the Dutchmen a 12-1 halftime lead with a woman-up goal in the final minute of the half off a pass from Morgan.
The Dutchmen kept up the pressure in the second half as Shack found the back of the net for the second time, and Whisler recorded her first assist of the game.
Emily Menet scored a woman-up goal off a pass from Schneider, and then
Grace Marchese scored off an assist by Hebert to put LVC up 15-1 with 9:31 remaining in the quarter. The Griffins were able to score a woman-up goal to cut the deficit to 13.
Shack and Hebert hit the post on back-to-back shots as LVC responded to the Gwynedd Mercy goal. The Dutchmen forced a turnover on a clear attempt and scored three more times in the final four minutes of the quarter to take an 18-2 advantage.
Megan Williver scored two goals as DeWitt found the first-year open both times. Shack had the middle of the three goals with Bagapuro recording the assist on the play.
LVC continued the dominant play into the fourth quarter with three more goals over the first half of the quarter. Cohee assisted Schneider's second goal of the game.
Maddie Puleo scored off an assist by Morgan, and then Shack found the back of the net off an assist from
Ellie Sarvis. The Dutchmen controlled possession and wound down the time throughout most of the final quarter. Sarvis added a goal on a free position shot late in the quarter. The Griffins scored with under two minutes left to set the final.
Inside the Box
- 13 different Dutchmen recorded points, with 12 scoring at least one goal. The team tied the program record with 19 assists in the game while equaling a season-high 41 points.
- Cohee led the team with eight points on one goal and a season-high seven assists. The senior moved into second place on the program's career assist leaderboard with 163. She passed Bailey Benz, who had 160 assists from 2012-15.
- Whisler scored all five of her goals in the first half and finished with six points. This was the fourth time in her career that the senior has scored at least five goals in a game.
- Shack scored a season-high four goals on six shots and won six draw controls.
- DeWitt dished out a career-high four assists and scored one goal for five points.
- Morgan, Hebert, and Williver scored two goals each. Morgan added two assists to her point total, while Hebert has one assist.
- Bagapuro recorded two assists while Sarvis and Schneider recorded one goal and one assist apiece.
- Chloe Moser won 10 draw controls for the second time in three games.
- The Dutchmen outshot the Griffins 35-7 and were a perfect 7-7 on clear attempts. They held the Griffins to 5-15 on clears while winning 21 of the 26 draw controls.

The Dutchmen will close out non-conference play next Saturday with a tough test at Arnold Field. LVC will take on The College of New Jersey, which is currently ranked 14th in this week's national poll, at 5 p.m. on March 28 in Annville.
