ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College Softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and five runs in the bottom of the sixth during an exciting 12-7 comeback victory over Messiah University in game one of a doubleheader on Monday, April 28, at the LVC Softball Park. LVC then dropped the second contest by a score of 6-1.
During the final regular season action of the year for the Flying Dutchmen, both
Julia Craig and
Holly Grube recorded four RBIs during the twin bill. The club received contributions from several players during its victory, as six drove in runs and 10 crossed the plate.
Game One
Maycee White started in the pitching circle for the Dutchmen (26-11, 13-1 MAC Freedom) and delivered a zero against the Falcons (28-10, 13-1 MAC Commonwealth) in the top of the first inning. The first-year recorded the final two outs of the frame with flyouts to right fielder
Mackenzie Willey to leave a runner at first base. Messiah then opened the scoring in the top of the second, taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run single up the middle.
The Dutchmen answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the second, taking a 3-2 advantage. The program loaded the bases after
Maddy Gronback hit a single to second base, Craig singled to right field, and
Bella Mackison drew a walk. Willey followed this by driving a two-run double off the left-center field fence, plating Gronback and Craig.
Erin Pattillo then hit a bunt RBI single to third base, bringing in Mackison.
The Falcons countered with a two-run home run to center field and an RBI double to left-center field in the top of the third inning, taking a 5-3 lead. Messiah followed this with a two-run single to center field in the top of the fourth, going up 7-3.
Maura Savoca then pitched a scoreless top of the fifth inning for Lebanon Valley, recording a lineout to shortstop
Megan Heard to strand runners at first and second base.
The Flying Dutchmen put together a four-run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning, tying the game at 7-7. Gronback came up to the plate with runners on the corners with two outs and hit an RBI single to left field, driving in pinch-runner
Abby McElroy. The club then loaded the bases and Craig came through with a clutch, three-run double to left-center field to score
Lexi Smith, Gronback, and
Nicole Kratz. This was followed by Savoca retiring the Falcons in order in the top of the sixth, registering a groundout to McElroy at shortstop, a strikeout looking, and a lineout to McElroy at shortstop.
Lebanon Valley also crossed the plate five times in the bottom of the sixth, going ahead 12-7. The club loaded the bases with one out and Grube lined a three-run triple to center field, plating Willey, Pattillo, and McElroy. Later in the inning, Kratz hit an RBI single through the left side to knock in Grube. This was followed by Craig reaching on an RBI fielder's choice to second base, scoring pinch-runner
Lauren Foster. Grube then moved from second base to the pitching circle in the top of the seventh inning, and the first-year notched the final out of LVC's victory with a groundout to McElroy at shortstop.

- Lebanon Valley outhit Messiah 13-11.
- Grube recorded two hits with a triple to extend her hitting streak to six games and a season-high three RBIs. The first-year also stole a base for a third straight game while crossing the plate for a fifth consecutive contest. Grube pitched a scoreless inning of relief as well.
- Craig tied a season-high two hits with a double while tying a game-high and career-high four RBIs. The graduate student also scored a run.
- Willey tied a season-high two hits with a double to extend her hitting streak to nine while knocking in two runs. The senior also scored a run for a fifth consecutive contest.
- Gronback picked up two hits and an RBI while tying a game-high and career-high two runs scored.
- Pattillo logged two base hits to extend her hitting streak to eight games, registering an RBI for her fourth game in a row. The senior also stole a base for a sixth straight contest and scored a run.
- Kratz tied a season-high two hits while scoring a run for a fifth consecutive game and driving in a run.
- McElroy tied a game-high and season-high two runs scored.
- Foster crossed the plate for a fifth consecutive game and stole a base.
- Smith scored a run for her third straight game.
- Mackison walked and scored a run.
- Savoca earned her first career win while tallying her first career strikeout in three innings of relief.
- Heard tallied a base hit to extend her hitting streak to six games.
Game Two
Messiah (29-10, 13-1 MAC Commonwealth) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking an early 3-0 lead on an RBI single through the right side and a two-run single through the right side. Grube then pitched a shutout top of the second for Lebanon Valley (26-12, 13-1 MAC Freedom), registering a groundout to McElroy at shortstop and a groundout to
Emily Mitchell at second base to strand a runner at second. The Falcons followed this with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, going up 5-0 on an RBI triple down the left-field line and an RBI groundout to second base.
The Dutchmen countered with a run in the bottom of the third, narrowing the score to 5-1. Pattillo led off the inning with a double to left field before coming home on Grube's RBI single up the middle. The Falcons followed this with an RBI triple to right-center field in the top of the fourth, taking a 6-1 advantage. LVC also continued to battle at the plate in the bottom of the fourth, as Craig led off the frame with a single up the middle, and
Katie Muller later hit a two-out single to shortstop.
White pitched her second frame of relief for Lebanon Valley in the top of the fifth inning and retired the side in order, recording a groundout to Smith at second base, a popout to Kratz at third base, and a flyout to Pattillo in left field. White also tossed a 1-2-3 top of the sixth, logging a lineout and a flyout to Willey in center field before a flyout to Muller in right field. In the top of the seventh inning, White posted another scoreless frame by registering a flyout to Pattillo in left field to leave a runner at third base. Ultimately, the score was maintained through the end of the game.

The Dutchmen will begin postseason competition at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, when the program will take on fourth-seeded DeSales University in its first matchup of the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship at the LVC Softball Park. The Dutchmen are the top seed in the MAC Freedom Championship and are hosting the tournament in Annville.
