Big First Quarter Powers Dutchmen to Win at King’s

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley women's lacrosse team started off conference play by outscoring host King's College 8-0 in the first quarter as the Dutchmen picked up a big 22-7 victory over the Monarchs on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in Wilkes-Barre.
 
Bethany Cohee started the scoring for the Dutchmen (6-5, 1-0 MAC Freedom) with an unassisted goal a little under two and a half minutes into the game. Alyssa Wene made it 2-0 with just over 11 minutes to go on a goal off a nice pass from Elizabeth Morgan. Wene scored again two minutes later before Emily Beard put a shot into the back of the net to increase the lead to 4-0 with eight minutes to go. The Monarchs held the Dutchmen off the scoreboard over the next three and a half minutes before LVC scored back-to-back goals. Molly Whisler found the back of the net off an assist from Cohee before Anna Lougee scored 13 seconds later off another assist by Cohee. The score increased to 7-0 on a free position goal from Wene before Beard ended the quarter with a woman-down goal to give the Dutchmen an eight-goal advantage.
 
King's got on the board nearly 90 seconds into the second quarter with a woman-up goal. The Dutchmen responded by winning the next two draw controls and scoring back-to-back goals. Wene finished off her hat trick for the first goal before Cohee assisted on a goal by Beard. The Monarchs scored on a free position attempt where they passed the ball before taking a shot at Jamie Handwerger in goal. Lougee gave the Dutchmen an 11-2 lead with a goal with under seven minutes to go in the half. King's would score two of the final three goals of the quarter in the final 2:09 starting with a free position goal. Erin Zieber won the following draw control and scored on a free position shot before King's scored with 45 seconds left to cut the Dutchmen lead to 12-4 at the break.
 
The teams traded goals over the first six minutes of the third quarter with the Monarchs scoring first just under three minutes into the half. Lougee scored her third goal of the game off an assist from Wene and then King's scored nine seconds later. Wene gave the Dutchmen back an eight-goal advantage with a free position goal with 9:19 on the clock. The Monarchs won the following draw control and scored 11 seconds later to cut the lead to 14-7. LVC responded by holding the Monarchs to no shot on goal over the final nine minutes of the quarter and scored three times to increase the lead to 17-7. Beard started the scoring run with her fourth goal of the game off another assist from Cohee. Lougee and Whisler scored unassisted goals within 30 seconds of each other to give LVC a 10-goal advantage.
 
The Dutchmen controlled possession for much of the fourth quarter held the Monarchs to just two total shots, both of which were saved by Handwerger. LVC scored five times in the final 15 minutes and won four of the six draw controls. Beard scored the first goal of the quarter on a free position attempt. Wene then added a goal off an assist by Cohee. Wene scored again with 6:26 left in the game off an assist by Beard and then Beard scored her 40th goal of the season two minutes later. Whisler rounded out the scoring with her third goal of the game off an assist by Zieber with 2:28 remaining.
 
Inside the Box
  • Zieber broke the program record with 16 draw controls. She broke the former record of 14 that was accomplished by Veronica Venezia at Alvernia in 2022. The graduate student also had two points on a goal and an assist against the Monarchs.
  • Wene led the Dutchmen with a career-high eight points on a career-high seven goals and an assist. Wene put nine of her 10 shots on goal and had three draw controls.
  • Beard won five draw controls and had seven points on six goals and one assist. Beard has now scored six or more goals in four of the past five games.
  • Cohee finished with six points on one goal and a team-high five assists. It is the third game this year the sophomore has dished out at least five assists.
  • Lougee scored four goals on five shots for her third four-goal game of the year.
  • Whisler recorded her first hat trick of the year with three goals on three shots.
  • LVC outshot the Monarchs 38-17 and held a 24-9 advantage on draw controls.
Up Next
The Dutchmen will be back in action on Wednesday as they host Arcadia University at 5 p.m. on Arnold Field for the first conference home game of the season.
