GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley softball team ended the regular season with an important split at former conference rival Messiah University in a battle of two regionally-ranked teams. The host Falcons used a big fourth inning to win the opener 10-4 and then Dutchmen used a great pitching performance by
Jordan Walter to win the nightcap 2-1.
Game One
After two scoreless innings, LVC scored four runs in the third to take the lead.
Mackenzie Willey led off with a walk and then
Lexi Smith singled to left.
Megan Heard reached on a bunt as Willey beat the throw to third and then
Julia Craig knocked in the first run of the game with a single to right field. Smith scored on the next play as the Falcon first baseman threw the ball away on the toss back to the pitcher after catching an infield fly. Two batters later
Nicole Kratz drove in two runs with a double down the line in left.
The Falcons loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with a single, double, and error. The Dutchmen got the second out of the inning on a ground ball to short as one run scored. After a walk to reload the bases,
Erin Pattillo got a fly ball to left to get out of the jam.
Maddy Gronback and Heard had singles up the middle in the fourth but Messiah got out of the inning with no runs across. The Falcons took advantage of two errors and four hits in the bottom of the inning to plate six runs and take a 7-4 advantage. They added three more in the fifth to increase the lead to 10-6. Gronback had a one-out double in the sixth, but the Falcons held the Dutchmen off the base paths the rest of the way to win the opener.
Inside the Box
- Gronback led the offense with two hits including her seventh double of the year.
- Kratz had a two-RBI double and made two assists with a putout in the field.
- Craig went 1-2 with a walk. She scored a run and knocked in a run. The senior pitched one inning of scoreless relief.
- Heard had a hit, stole a base, and scored a run. In the field she had four putouts and three assist.
- Smith had a hit and scored a run while Pattillo recorded a double.
- The Dutchmen scored four runs on seven hits against MAC Commonwealth Pitcher of the Week Lydia Collison.
Game Two
The second game started out the same as the first with two scoreless innings.
Katie Muller reached base to begin the third on a fielding error by the Falcon second baseman.
Danni Holmes singled through the right side to put two runners on. Two batters later,
Lexi Smith hit a one-out bloop single down the left field line to load the bases. Craig then knocked in a run with a grounder to first where the throw home was late as Holmes scored the first run of the game. The Falcons got out of the jam with two balls to the shortstop.
LVC added a huge insurance run for
Jordan Walter in the fifth as Heard led off with a single back up the middle that went off the pitcher's mitt. Smith moved her over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Craig knocked in the eventual game-winning run with a single up the middle.
Lindsey McCurdy and
Sam Burns drew walks to load the bases but a short fly to center and a ground ball to second got Messiah out of the jam. The Falcons were able to get on the board in the sixth as the leadoff hitter got on base by virtue of an error. She came around to score with two outs on a single through the right side. Walter got out of the bases loaded jam with a fly ball to left.
Messiah started the bottom of the seventh with a triple down the line in right. Walter got the next batter to pop up to short. The next hitter attempted to bunt but the ball popped up behind the plate and Holmes was able to grab it for the second out of the inning. McCurdy then made a spectacular play in center field to end the game with a run-saving catch.
Inside the Box
- Craig knocked in both runs for her team-leading seventh multi-RBI game and had one hit.
- Heard reached base for the 25th consecutive game with two hits and a run scored.
- Walter won her 17th game of the year with a dominant four-hitter. She struck out four and walked one.
- Holmes had two hits and scored a run while making five putouts behind the plate.
- LVC had eight hits as Smith, Pattillo, and Nikki Sellers added a hit each.
- The Dutchmen won their 30th game giving the program at least 30 wins in back-to-back years.
Up Next
LVC will host the MAC Freedom Championship this weekend at the Softball Park. The top-seeded Dutchmen will play in Thursday's second game of the day as they take on fourth-seeded FDU-Florham at 3:30 p.m. in Annville. Second-seeded Misericordia University plays third-seeded DeSales University at 1 p.m. in the first game of the day.
