READING, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College women's lacrosse team received contributions from several players, as six members of the Dutchmen netted goals during the program's 20-6 victory over Albright College on Wednesday, March 27 at Gene L. Shirk Stadium.
Emily Beard helped lead the way, scoring her 100th career goal during a career-high nine-point performance.
The Flying Dutchmen (5-4) and the Lions (1-9) battled on the defensive end early, keeping the contest scoreless for over five minutes at the start. During this stretch, LVC's defense posted a zero with two saves by goalkeeper
Jamie Handwerger. Lebanon Valley opened the scoring with 9:17 remaining in the first quarter, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal by
Anna Lougee.
Albright responded with a goal 58 seconds later before scoring again with 5:54 left in the frame, taking a 2-1 advantage. The Dutchmen answered back with 4:14 to go in the first, as Beard netted a free position goal to even the score at 2-2. LVC added another tally before the end of the quarter, claiming a 3-2 lead with 18 seconds on the clock after a free position goal by
Alyssa Wene.
Lebanon Valley scored again 3:32 into the second quarter, going ahead 4-2. The program cleared the ball and Beard sent a shot into the back of the net, putting the squad up by two. The Lions countered with a goal just over two minutes later before Beard scored her third goal of the game, providing the Flying Dutchmen with a 5-3 advantage with 8:51 to play in the first half. Albright attempted to trim its deficit to one with a free position shot when there was 6:49 left, but Handwerger made a save to maintain the score.
LVC tacked on another point with 5:21 remaining in quarter two, taking a 6-3 lead on a goal by Beard after an assist by
Elizabeth Morgan. Beard found the net again with 2:56 to go in the stanza, scoring her 100
th career goal and putting the program up 7-3 on another free position shot. The Lions responded with a goal when there were 55 seconds left, narrowing the score to 7-4. The Dutchmen took this three-goal advantage into halftime.
Erin Zieber won the opening draw control in the second half before Lebanon Valley extended its advantage to 8-4 just 1:20 into the third quarter on another goal by Beard. The Flying Dutchmen proceeded to keep the offense rolling by making it a 9-4 contest 1:25 later, as Zieber registered a goal. Albright then found the net with 8:37 to play in the third, advancing the score to 9-5. Lebanon Valley answered right back with Wene's second goal, claiming a 10-5 lead with 5:54 remaining.
The Dutchmen continued their offensive production as the third quarter went on, going ahead 11-5 against the Lions with 4:13 to go.
Bethany Cohee sent a shot into the net, courtesy of an assist by Wene. LVC put another point on the scoreboard with 3:30 left in the frame, making it a 12-5 contest after a free position goal by Zieber. Defensively, Handwerger continued to help limit the opposition with four saves in the quarter. The goalkeeper made a save on Albright's final shot of the third with 1:23 remaining, preserving Lebanon Valley's seven-goal advantage.
The Flying Dutchmen didn't waste any time finding the net in the fourth quarter, claiming a 13-5 lead 26 seconds into the frame on a goal by Zieber. Lougee netted LVC's next two goals, putting the team ahead 15-5 with 12:31 left in the fourth. Morgan dished out the assist on the first goal in this span while Cohee assisted the second. The Lions added a point 1:17 later, advancing the score to 15-6.
Lebanon Valley proceeded to close out the game by scoring five consecutive goals in the remaining 11:14. Zieber sent her fourth goal of the night into the net with 10:18 to go, giving the squad a 10-point advantage. Beard then scored another goal with 8:10 to play, following an assist by Cohee. Lougee and Cohee netted the next two goals, courtesy of assists by Beard. The Dutchmen capped off the scoring with an unassisted goal by Wene with 1:07 on the clock, securing the 20-6 win.
