Wene Scores Overtime Game-Winner at Marywood

SCRANTON, Pa. – Alyssa Wene gave the Lebanon Valley women's lacrosse team an exciting 14-13 overtime victory at Marywood University on Tuesday afternoon with a free position goal with 36 seconds left in the extra session.

The Dutchmen never trailed as they earned their first win of the season in the rain at Pacers Field. Wene scored the first goal of the game on a free position attempt six minutes into the contest. The Pacers responded right away with a goal 45 seconds later to tie things up. Erin Zieber gave LVC back the lead with seven minutes left as Elizabeth Morgan found the graduate student open across the middle. Emily Beard won the ensuing draw control and got the ball to Molly Whisler who fired a shot into the back of the net to give the Dutchmen a 3-1 lead. Beard then increased the lead to three goals with a free position shot from the right side. The Dutchmen kept the pressure on as Wene nearly gave LVC another goal as her shot hit the post with a little over 3:17 left. Bethany Cohee sent the Dutchmen into the second quarter with a 5-1 advantage with a free position goal with 45 seconds remaining.

Marywood cut the lead in half with a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the second. Wene and Beard scored back-to-back goals to put the lead back to four. Beard increased the lead to 8-3 with her third goal of the game with 6:44 on the clock. LVC took their biggest lead of the game with five minutes to go in the half after Wene scored another free position goal. The Pacers called timeout to regroup and finished the half with a pair of goals to cut the lead to 9-5.

The rain began coming down during the halftime break and neither team was able to score over the first seven minutes of the third quarter. Marywood scored a goal with both teams playing a woman down and then added another goal 50 seconds later to cut the lead down to two. As the rain started to calm down near the end of the quarter Beard scored a woman-up goal off an assist by Morgan to start a run of four total goals in the final four minutes. Wene put the Dutchmen up 11-7 with an unassisted tally before the Pacers found the back of the net twice in the final minute to bring the score to 11-9 going into the fourth quarter.

The Pacers started the fourth with a goal to make it a one-score game for the first time since midway through the first quarter. Beard won the next draw and was fouled for a free position attempt which she converted to put the lead back up to two. With the rain picking back up, the Pacers scored on a free position attempt with just under seven minutes left to make it 12-11. Wene put the lead back to two off an assist by Whisler with four minutes on the clock to give the Dutchmen some breathing room. Marywood responded with a goal 30 seconds later off a rebound shot that was saved. LVC had an opportunity to close the game out in regulation as Wene forced a turnover and picked up the groundball on a clear attempt with a little over a minute to go in the quarter. However, the Pacers were able to get the ball back and hurried up the field. They scored the tying goal with 13.9 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

In overtime neither team was able to get a shot off until Wene had her attempt at goal saved a little over two minutes into the period. Marywood had a good look right before the first three minutes expired but their shot went wide. The Dutchmen controlled possession over the course of the second three-minute session and Wene had a shot kept out of goal with just over a minute left. Morgan picked up the groundball and got the ball back into the stick of Wene who was fouled to set up a free position attempt with 41 seconds on the clock. The junior stepped up and sent the ball past the keeper and into the back of the goal for the game-winner.
