CARLISLE, Pa. – Senior captain
Emily Beard had two goals and an assist to lead the Lebanon Valley women's lacrosse team in a hard-fought 15-7 defeat on a cold Sunday morning at Dickinson College in the season opener for both teams.
The Red Devils scored the first three goals of the game in the first three minutes. LVC responded as
Elizabeth Morgan found
Anna Lougee cutting across the middle for the first goal of the year with 11:14 left in the quarter. Dickinson increased their lead to 4-1 with a goal before Beard blasted a shot from the right side into the back of the netting with a little over four minutes to go. The Red Devils scored four times over the final three minutes to take an 8-2 lead.
The Dutchmen tightened up the defense in the second quarter and held the Red Devils off the board until a woman-up goal on a free position shot with 7:40 to go in the half. That was the only goal allowed in the period as LVC went on the offensive for the final seven minutes and scored three times to cut the lead to 9-5 at half.
Alyssa Wene scored the first goal off an assist by
Bethany Cohee on a woman-up opportunity. Wene then scored again with a little over four minutes to go. Lougee scored her second goal of the game with 1:32 left to bring the Dutchmen back within four.
LVC battled tough in the third quarter, but the Red Devils scored four times to increase their lead to 13-5. The first goal came in the opening minute of the half on a free position shot as the Dutchmen were a woman down due to a green card near the end of the second quarter. The Red Devils added goals with 9:30 left and with just under six minutes to go. Beard had a free position shot saved 45 seconds prior to Dickinson's 12th goal of the game. The Red Devils scored the final goal of the period with 1:40 on the clock.
Beard began a valiant comeback effort with her second goal of the game a little over a minute into the fourth quarter after a successful clear attempt. Wene had an excellent opportunity to cut into the lead even more as she forced a turnover on a Dickinson clear and was one-on-one with the Red Devil goalkeeper, but her shot was denied on a great save. Dickinson scored with nine minutes to go and LVC responded right back as
Riley Finnegan won the draw control and then Beard found Morgan for her first collegiate goal 30 seconds after the Red Devil score.
