SALISBURY, Md. – The Lebanon Valley College softball team's incredible season came to a close on Saturday, dropping game two of the NCAA Super Regional 4-0 to No. 1 Salisbury University at Sea Gull Softball Stadium.
Pitching was the story in the second game of this series, as the staffs of both Lebanon Valley (36-12) and Salisbury (44-3) limited tallies on the scoreboard. Starting pitcher
Erin Sinatra delivered a solid start, striking out a batter in five innings of work.
Jordan Walter then made an appearance out of the bullpen, helping maintain the score with two shutout frames. LVC's lineup battled at the plate all afternoon, recording five hits and three walks.
Sinatra cruised through the first two innings of the game, keeping the Sea Gulls off the scoreboard early. Salisbury's offense then opened the scoring in the top of the third frame, taking a 2-0 lead over the Dutchmen on a two-run single to left field by Natalie Paoli. SU added a couple more runs in the top of the fifth, extending its advantage to 4-0 on a two-run home run to left field by Lindsey Windsor.
Walter entered the game in relief in the top of the sixth inning, beginning her outing with a scoreless frame. Despite trailing by four, the Flying Dutchmen continued to compete in the batter's box. The club loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on a walk by designated player
Nicole Kratz, a pinch hit single by
Julia Forsythe and a walk by shortstop
Megan Heard.
Salisbury had an opportunity to tack on some insurance runs in the top of the seventh, getting runners on second and third base with one out. The Sea Gulls' right fielder then opted to bunt, but sent the ball right back to Walter, who made the catch and threw to third base for the inning-ending double play.
This would ultimately stand as the final score, bringing Lebanon Valley's season to an end. The Dutchmen put together a season for the record books in 2023, finishing the year with a 36-12 overall record. The club made history with its postseason run, marking the furthest a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) program has advanced in the NCAA Tournament since Messiah University reached the national championship in 2016.
