ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley softball team starved off elimination on Friday with a pair of big wins to advance to Saturday's Regional Championship Round at the LVC Softball Park against top-seeded University of Rochester. The Dutchmen defeated Eastern Nazarene College 6-2 and then held off a late rally by 24th-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University to win 3-2.
Game One vs. Eastern Nazarene
The Dutchmen (33-10) started the day with a big win over fourth-seeded Eastern Nazarene (22-21) for the program's first NCAA Tournament win since 2015.
Erin Sinatra held the Lions scoreless for six innings in the circle. LVC broke the scoreless tie in the fifth with a run.
Lindsey McCurdy led off the inning with a single to right field.
Megan Heard had a bunt single back to the pitcher and then advanced to second as McCurdy was thrown out trying to steal third.
Anna Marie Hockman walked and then
Sam Burns singled to left in which Heard scored as the Lion left field was not able to come up with the ball cleanly for an error.
The bats got going in the seventh as the Dutchmen scored five runs, all with two outs, on seven hits. Heard singled to right with one out and then
Julia Forsythe started the two-out rally with a pinch-hit single to center. Burns beat out a ball back to the pitcher to load the bases.
Lexi Smith knocked a shot pass a drawn in second baseman for a two-RBI single and then advance to second on the throw.
Julia Craig kept things going with a single to center to make it 4-0.
Nicole Kratz singled through the left side to score Smith and then
Kylie Balthaser just missed a home run with a double off of the top of the fence in left field.
Sinatra got the first two batters out in the bottom of the inning before the Lions put together a rally to score two runs.
Jordan Walter relieved Sinatra after the second run was scored and ended the game with a bases-loaded strikeout.
Inside the Box Score
- LVC had three batters with multi-hit games and outhit the Lions 11-8.
- Smith had a great game with two hits, two RBI, and a run scored. In the field she made a putout and an assist.
- Heard scored twice, had two hits, and played a strong shortstop with three putouts and an assist.
- Burns had two hits in the leadoff spot and scored a run.
- Sinatra earned her 12th win of the year with eight strikeouts.
- Walter struck out one in relief.
Game Two vs. Eastern Connecticut State
LVC (34-10) avenged their Thursday defeat to 24th-ranked Eastern Connecticut State (29-12) with a strong pitching performance by Walter and great defense. The Dutchmen got on the board first on a Kratz single up the middle to score Burns in the first inning. Burns led off the inning with a single through the left side and then stole second. Smith moved her over to third with a ground out before Kratz came up with a big two-out single for the first run of the game.
The Warriors got on the board in the fourth as Julia SanGiovanni led off the inning with a double to left center. A pair of bunt singles scored the tying run, and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Walter calmly worked out of the jam with no more damage as she struck out a batter and then induced two ground balls to third and first. LVC wasted no time responding in the bottom of the inning as Balthaser and McCurdy hit back-to-back singles. Heard was hit by a pitch to load the bases before
Danni Holmes came up with a big RBI infield single to third base on a chopper down the line. McCurdy gave the Dutchmen another insurance run as she scored on a Burn sacrifice line out to center field on a sliding catch.
Walter did the rest of the work in the circle as the junior held the Warriors off the board until the seventh when ECSU made a two-out rally. Walter got the first two outs of the inning before a double and walk put two runners on. The Warriors hit a single down the line in left to make it a one-run game. Burns made a spectacular diving catch in foul territory to end the game and give the Dutchmen a thrilling win.

- Walter earned her 18th win of the year with three strikeouts. The junior forced 12 ground outs.
- Anna Marie Hockman was busy at third base and had a great defensive game with five assists and one putout.
- Balthaser had two hits and scored a run.
- Holmes also had two hits and knocked in a run.
- Burns had a hit, a run scored, an RBI, two stolen bases, and made three putouts in left field.
- Kratz had an RBI and a hit.
- The Dutchmen had four stolen bases.
- LVC defeated a ranked team for the second time this season and advanced to the Regional Championship for the first time since 2014.

The Dutchmen will face top-seeded and 15th-ranked Rochester on Saturday in the Regional Championship round. LVC will need to defeat the Yellowjackets twice in order to advance to next weekend's Super Regionals. Rochester advanced with a 5-3 victory over ECSU in the first game on Friday. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Softball Park with the if necessary game to follow at 1:30 p.m.
