Danni Holmes Knocks in Run in NCAA Softball Opener

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Danni Holmes knocked in Kylie Balthaser in the second inning as the Lebanon Valley softball team began their NCAA Tournament run with a hard-fought 4-1 defeat to 24th-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University on Thursday afternoon in a pitcher's duel at the LVC Softball Park.

There was just five total hits in the game as Jordan Walter and Carley Stoker threw a pair of gems in the opening game of the regional. The Warriors (29-10) got on the board in the first inning with a one-out double and a two-run home run to left center by Julia SanGiovanni. LVC (32-10) struck right back in the top of the second as Balthaser drew a leadoff walk and then scored four batters later on a Holmes single to left center. The Dutchmen put runners on the corners with two outs for Holmes who came up with the big hit to cut the lead in half.

SanGiovanni led off the fourth with a hit-by-pitch with two strikes. After she was pinch ran for by Kaylee Armida, the speedy junior made her way to third on a passed ball and stolen base. She scored on a single back up the middle to make it 3-1. SanGiovanni had the final hit of the game with her second home run of the game, a leadoff shot to left center in the sixth.
