CHESTER, Pa. – Left fielder
Sam Burns provided the Lebanon Valley College softball team with a three-hit performance, fueling the club's 9–5 victory over Widener University on Wednesday night at Widener University Softball Field. The Dutchmen and the Pride were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but game two was suspended in third inning with Widener winning 3–2, due to inclement weather.
Game One
Lebanon Valley (29-6, 13-0 MAC Commonwealth) took the first game against Widener 9–5 (15-21, 3-9 MAC Commonwealth) behind two big innings at the plate and a dominant relief pitching performance from
Jordan Walter. LVC's lineup scored nine runs on 13 hits, posting a four-run second inning and a five-run fifth. This offensive clinic was led by Burns driving in three runs and designated player
Nicole Kratz hitting her fourth home run of the season.
The Pride opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, taking an early 2–0 lead on a two-run single to right-center field. The Flying Dutchmen promptly responded in the top of the second, putting up four runs to take a 4–2 lead. Third baseman
Anna Marie Hockman got the team on the board by driving a double to left field, scoring
Lexi Smith. Later in the frame, Burns hit a two-run double to left, plating Hockman and
Danni Holmes. Burns then stole third base and came home to score on the play because of an error by Widener's catcher.
The Pride answered right back in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 5–4 lead on a bases-clearing three-run double to right-center field. The pitching staffs of both clubs then settled down for a few frames, trading zeros until the top of the fifth. Walter entered the game in the third inning and delivered a dominant one-hit effort in fifth innings of work, striking out four in the process.
There was a delay at the start of the fifth inning due to inclement weather. LVC resumed the game with a big fifth frame, reclaiming the lead to make it a 9–5 ballgame. Kratz evened the score by sending a solo homer over the left-center field fence. Later in the inning, shortstop
Megan Heard was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate
Kylie Balthaser. Burns followed this with a two-run single to center field, driving in Heard and Hockman. The scoring was capped off by center fielder
Lindsey McCurdy hitting a ground ball to shortstop and reaching on a fielder's choice, allowing Holmes to cross the plate.
This would stand as the final score, as Walter blanked the Pride in the final two innings of the contest to close it out.
