ANNVILLE, Pa. – Solid pitching performances from
Jordan Walter in game one and
Erin Sinatra in game two helped the Lebanon Valley College softball team sweep its doubleheader against Eastern University on Wednesday afternoon at LVC Softball Park. The Dutchmen took the first game 4–2 and posted a 5–0 victory in the second contest. The second win of the afternoon was also fueled by
Julia Craig's first home run of the season.
Game One
The Flying Dutchmen (24-5, 9-0 MAC Commonwealth) defeated the Eagles (18-8, 6-3 MAC Commonwealth) behind a balanced effort, scoring four runs on eight hits and holding the opposition to just a pair of runs. Walter set the tone in the pitching circle, striking out six batters in a complete game performance.
Lebanon Valley got on the scoreboard first in this one, taking an early 2–0 lead in the bottom of the first. Designated player
Nicole Kratz lined an infield single that deflected off the third baseman's glove, scoring Craig. This was followed by center fielder
Lindsey McCurdy crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
LVC tacked on a couple more runs in the bottom of the third inning, extending their lead to 4–0. Craig lined a single that deflected off of the first baseman's glove, bringing home
Sam Burns in the process. Later in the frame, Kratz drove a double down the left field line to plate
Alden Partyka.
Eastern attempted to get back into the game, narrowing Lebanon Valley's lead to 4–2. The Eagles crossed the plate in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded walk and added another run in the fifth on an RBI groundout to shortstop. Ultimately, this would hold as the final score because Walter would close out the game by keeping the opposition scoreless in the last two innings.
Inside the Box Score
- Kratz recorded two hits and drove in two runs.
- McCurdy also logged two knocks.
- Craig picked up a base hit, a run batted in and a run scored.
- Walter struck out six batters in the game while picking up her 11th victory.
Game Two
Lebanon Valley (25-5, 10-0 MAC Commonwealth) was dominant on both sides of the ball in the second game, posting its sixth shutout victory of the campaign. Sinatra held Eastern (18-9, 6-4 MAC Commonwealth) in check as the starting pitcher, yielding just four hits without allowing a run. Craig's two-run homer and three runs batted in also played a pivotal role in the outcome.
This one was a pitcher's duel early on, as the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning. The Dutchmen broke the offensive silence in the bottom of the third, plating a pair of runs to take a 2–0 advantage. Burns got things started with an infield RBI single on a ground ball to shortstop, scoring
Anna Marie Hockman. Craig followed this by lining a single to right field, driving in Erin Patillo.
LVC then added some insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, extending their lead to 5–0. Burns continued to produce in the batter's box by grounding an infield RBI single back to the pitcher, plating
Lexi Smith. The scoring was capped off by Craig sending a two-run homer over the right field fence, bringing home Burns. This would end up being the final score, as Sinatra continued to dominate by blanking the Eagles in the sixth and seventh.
