MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. –
Kylie Balthaser singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Lebanon Valley College softball team a big 2-1 victory over NJAC power Montclair State University on Wednesday in Myrtle Beach.
Game 1 vs. Montclair State
The Red Hawks (3-2) struck first with a run in the third inning. LVC (3-2) responded in the fourth with a run of their own to tie things up at one in a pitcher's duel. The Dutchmen walked off with the victory in the eight when Balthaser hit a single off the glove of a diving second baseman to score
Sam Burns with the winning run from second.
Inside the Box Score
- Morgan Comfort had a big day at the plate with three hits in three at-bats. She scored the run in the fourth inning off an Anna Marie Hockman double to left. Her third hit of the day was the 100th of her collegiate career.
- Lexi Smith had another productive game in the leadoff spot with two hits in four at-bats.
- Julia Craig hit a single to right-center in the eighth before Burns came in to pinch run for speed on the base paths. The move worked to perfection as Burns stole second and then scored on a hard-hit ball up the middle that the MSU second baseman drove for and kept from going into the gap.
- Jordan Walter pitched a gem in the circle going the full game. She allowed just one run on three hits, three walks, and five strikeouts.
- This was the first-ever meeting between the Dutchmen and Red Hawks.
Game 2 vs. Eastern Mennonite
The Flying Dutchmen were in the middle of a thrilling game against EMU before a big storm rolled through the area stopping the action in the fourth inning. The game will not be continued and since it had not yet reached the point of an official game stats will not count.
Who's Next
The Dutchmen will enjoy another off day on Thursday before returning to the field on Friday morning for a pair of games against Penn College and Cazenovia College. The game against Penn College will be on Field 6 at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex starting at 9:30 a.m. with the game against Cazenovia to follow on Field 3.
