How It Happened
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Stevenson University netted three late goals to pull away from and defeat Lebanon Valley 15-12 in the MAC Commonwealth Women's Lacrosse Quarterfinal round. The Flying Dutchmen ended their season at 6-7, while the Mustangs will play at Messiah on Thursday in the Conference Semifinal round.
Â
After Stevenson's Caroline Murphy opened the scoring with 23:55 to go in the first, LVC rattled off three straight, one from
Erin Zieber,
Jaclyn Little, and
Brittany Hathaway, to take a 3-1 lead with 20:21 left. The Mustangs responded with a pair of goals at 16:37 and 13:05, however, to tie things up at 3-3.
Â
Bailey Dills then netted an unassisted goal, but the home team scored three straight to go up 6-4 with 3:33 to go in the opening half. Little then brought LVC to within one with 1:08 to go, but the Dutchmen were still down by one heading into halftime.
Â
In the second half, with 19:47 remaining, Hathaway's goal from
Veronica Venezia, the reigning MAC Commonwealth Player of the Week, sparked a 3-0 run by LVC and with 16:50 to go, Zimmerman's tally from Little evened things up at 9-9. Kara Yarusso put Stevenson back on top less than a minute later, and Caroline Murphy and Tea Ferrara completed the Mustangs' mini run that made it 12-9 in favor of Stevenson with 13:41 left.
Â
Venezia then scored back-to-back goals at 12:40 and 9:52 to bring the Dutchmen to within one at 12-11, but a crucial three-goal spurt by Stevenson put the game out of reach, as the Mustangs scored three times in less than two minutes and held on late for the 15-12 win.
