FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Lebanon Valley's outstanding 2017-18 season came to an end with a 5-0 loss to North Carolina Wesleyan in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on the campus of Mary Washington on Friday morning, May 11.
The Flying Dutchmen (12-7) ran up against an NC Wesleyan squad that had been idle since winning the USA South Championship back on April 15. The Battling Bishops (13-3) proved well worthy of a spot in the NCAA Tournament thanks to a stellar performance in Friday's outing.
In doubles action, NC Wesleyan's top team of Stephany Barbera and Talitha Rowan defeated LVC's
Marla Scacchitti and
Melanie Haas, while Nicole Halabi and Giulia Zanetti went over
Sammy Bost and
Megan Williams in the No. 2 contest. The Bishops made it a clean sweep in doubles play when Florencia Sorrentino and Ana Aguilar defeated
Elise Hanks-Witaszek and
Emily Wilczek in the third matchup. All three matches were decided by 8-0 scores.
NC Wesleyan continued its strong play in singles action, with Rowan defeating
Elizabeth Drda 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 contest and Aguilar going over
Meridyth Sanders 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6 outing to get the Bishops to five victories and seal the match.
With LVC's season now complete, the 2017-18 campaign will go down as one of the most memorable in program history, with the Dutchmen winning just the second conference title in program history after four players in Bost, Scacchitti, Williams, and Haas earned MAC Commonwealth All-Conference honors to cap the regular season.
