How It Happened
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
Makenzie Kelley netted nine goals to lead Lebanon Valley to a 21-10 victory over Lycoming in each team's MAC Commonwealth opener on Thursday afternoon. The Dutchmen won their fourth straight and moved to 6-3, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth, while the Warriors fell to 3-6, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth.
LVC hopped out to an early 3-0 lead just under five minutes into the contest, thanks to goals from
Jaclyn Little,
Veronica Venezia, and Kelley. Lyco responded with a 4-0 run that spanned five minutes to jump ahead 4-3 with 17:57 remaining in the first half. After
Emma Jones netted her first of the game at 15:14 to even the score at 4-4, the Warriors' Kelly McGinniss put Lyco back up by one at 5-4 with 13:55 to go. From there, the Dutchmen rattled off six consecutive goals, including
Kayci Strous' first collegiate goal, to take a 10-5 lead. During that significant spurt, Kelley netted three more goals and Venezia and Jones each scored one. Lyco scored with 4:45 remaining in the opening half, but LVC still took a solid 10-6 advantage into the second half.
The Dutchmen opened up the second half with three straight tallies, which included a pair from Jones and one from Little, to extend their lead to 13-6. Lyco's Hailey Kimble stopped the bleeding momentarily with a score at 18:10, but Kelley followed with yet another goal, followed by a Venezia tally and another from Kelley to give LVC a cushion at 16-7. The high-scoring game continued, as Taylor Herberger scored two straight for the home team to make it 16-9, but Kelley scored her seventh of the game at 4:59 and
Emily Federowicz made it 18-9 Dutchmen just 20 seconds later.
With 4:16 to play, Kelley found the back of the net for her eighth of the game, and with 29 seconds remaining, she scored her ninth of the game to tie LVC's single-game record and give the Dutchmen a 21-10 lead in the statement victory.
