How It HappenedLebanon Valley ended its 2015 regular season by winning its fifth-straight game and avenging an early-season loss to Misericordia thanks to a 6-2 victory over the Cougars on Wednesday afternoon.
The Flying Dutchmen (12-21) grabbed an early lead they wouldn't relinquish and got a strong combined pitching effort from
Haley Neff,
Jasmine Dutton, and
Haley Christensen.
Cheyanne Brown picked up LVC's first hit of the day in the bottom of the first, advanced to second on
Sammy Bost's groundout, stole third, and scored when
Emily Johnson lined an RBI single to center field.
Neff stranded Misericordia's Megan Hardy after she led off the second with a double before retiring the Cougars (24-13) 1-2-3 in the top of the third. Dutton took to the circle in the fourth and stranded two more MU runners in the top half.
The Dutchmen offense rewarded its hurlers with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Bost led off with a single through the right side before promptly stealing second and third. Dutton's single found the hole on the right side and drove in Bost two batters later.
Elaine Gross doubled deep to right field, scoring
Jordyn Miller in the process and
Alissa Robinson's infield single pushed Dutton across. Gross capped the stanza's scoring when she plated on a wild pitch.
The visitors got on the board in the fifth when Whitney Ellenberg's single drove in Andi Veneziale from second base but LVC responded with a run in the bottom half when
Kelli Valle's single to left field scored Brown from third base after she singled and swiped two bags.
Misericordia added one more run on a Melissa Parker sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth but it was far from enough as Christensen, second baseman
Liz Bauer, and Robinson combined for the game's final outs in the seventh, sealing the season-finale victory and erasing the memory of a 14-7 loss to the Cougars in Florida way back on March 3.
