ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Lebanon Valley College softball team slugged its way to a pair of big wins Thursday, scoring early and often to sweep Susquehanna University, 8-0 and 11-1, in non-conference action.
The Dutchmen (13-6, 2-0 CC) have won seven in a row and 10 of their last 11. Both games finished after five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.
In game one, LVC put four on the board in each of the first two innings, including a pair of two-run home runs by Katie DeJulio and Jess Salisbury. Game two saw LVC again jump out to a 4-0 lead in the first en route to the 11-1 victory.
Several Dutchmen had standout offensive performances, including Kristen Uhas, who was 4-for-5 with five RBI and three runs; DeJulio, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run; and Salisbury and Allie Davies, who each had three RBI on the day. Lauren Sanford scored five runs.
The Dutchmen also received some solid pitching performances. Freshman Laura Snyder picked up the win in game one to go to 5-1 on the season, giving up just two hits and a walk to go with five strikeouts. In the nightcap, Val Malizzia earned the victory to improve to 6-1, allowing two hits in four innings of work before Chelsea Artz closed out the game.
Game one began with Sanford reaching on a single, and Snyder's sacrifice bunt moved her up. Uhas smacked a single through the left side to score Sanford, sparking a four-run rally that ended with DeJulio's longball over the left-field fence.
The second inning was more of the same. Artz and Sanford got on to lead off, and Uhas scored both of them with a single up the middle. Salisbury then jacked one deep to right center to score two more.
Meanwhile, Snyder allowed just two baserunners, both on doubles, the rest of the game as LVC cruised to the 8-0 win.
In the second game, the Dutchmen again generated four runs in the first. Sanford led off with a single, and she scored on Uhas' double. Davies' sac fly plated Uhas, and a batter later, Katie Freeman knocked in a pair of runs with a double to the fence.
Uhas drove in Sanford for a run in the second, and LVC added four more in the fourth, including a two-run, bases-clearing double by DeJulio. Snyder added two more runs in the fifth, doubling to the gap in right center to plate Meghan Donoghue and Caitlin Keller.
LVC will return to conference play Saturday, heading to Widener for a key Commonwealth doubleheader at 1 p.m.
