WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Wilkes University shut down Lebanon Valley College in a pair of pitcher's duels Thursday, winning both ends of a doubleheader, 3-2 and 1-0, in softball action.
The Dutchmen (22-9) had an eight-game winning streak snapped by the Colonels (26-12). LVC had won 16 of its last 17 games heading into the doubleheader.
Game one saw Laura Snyder stop wilkes for four innings before surrendering three runs in the fifth, while game two saw each team put up just three hits as Lindsay Behrenshausen outdueled Val Malizzia.
In the opener, LVC struck first in the fourth inning. With Kristen Uhas reaching on an error, Jess Salisbury stepped up and ripped a two-run home run to put LVC up 2-0. However, Wilkes retaliated in the fifth thanks to Alex Ingram's two-run double and an RBI single by Kathy Dalton.
The Dutchmen managed just one baserunner over the final two innings as they failed to find the tying run.
In the nightcap, both pitchers hurled gems, but it was Behrenshausen who got the better end of things as she earned the shutout. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth when Melisa Bracone singled in Dalton for the eventual winning run.
LVC will return home for Senior Day on Saturday, hosting Elizabethtown starting at 1 p.m.
