FT. PIERCE, Fla. - Senior John Mentzer pushed his hitting streak to 28 consecutive games as Lebanon Valley College split a doubleheader with Kenyon College Monday in Ft. Pierce, Fla.
The Flying Dutchmen (2-1) captured the first game 10-8 before falling in the nightcap, 9-3.
Mentzer went 2-for-5 in the first game and 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly in game two to keep his streak alive a day after hitting for the cycle against Juniata.
In the opener, the Dutchmen brought out the bats as they led off the game with five consecutive singles and six first-inning runs. LVC piled on three more in the second thanks to Joe Kopchick's RBI single and Paul Earle's two-RBI single.
Kenyon came back, though, with three in the fifth, and after Joe Soupik's RBI double in the bottom of the inning put LVC up 10-3, Kenyon made a spirited comeback attempt in the top of the seventh with five runs. Nick Faria came out and Jacob Becker worked the final two-thirds of the inning to secure the win.
Faria earned the win, giving up nine hits and seven runs. Geoff Bollier took the loss, giving up 16 hits and 10 runs - all earned - in five innings of work.
In game two, it was Kenyon that ran out of the gate as they led 5-0 after three. Grant Wiest's single put Chris Schank across in the fourth, and Corey Lamoureux's double and Mentzer's sacrifice fly put two more up for LVC in the fifth. The Dutchmen ultimately couldn't overcome a hot-hitting game by Kenyon's Will Smith, who went 4-for-4 with 4 RBI and a run scored.
Charley Kline pitched four innings in the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits; Tom Boucher earned the win with a four-hitter in six innings of work.
LVC continues their spring break swing Tuesday against Pennsylvania rival Alvernia College at 11:30 a.m.
