HERSHEY, Pa. - For the second straight day, No. 2 Elmira College showed why they are the nation's last unbeaten team as they had no trouble with Lebanon Valley College, winning 8-1 at HersheyPark Arena.
The Flying Dutchmen (1-15-1, 0-8 ECAC West) failed to convert a number of quality scoring chances, while the Eagles (13-0-2, 6-0 ECAC West) stayed atop the ECAC West standings with the win. Unlike Friday night's game in which LVC held Elmira to 0-for-12 on the power play, the Eagles went 4-for-9 in the game.
An entertaining first period had several chances to score for both teams, but the game remained scoreless until the final moments of the period.
The Dutchmen saw their best chance of the period come on a late Elmira power play. With two minutes left on the clock, Brad Surdam poked the puck out of the zone and found a breakaway opportunity, but his left-side shot was denied by Casey Tuttle.
Seconds later, after a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty put the Dutchmen in a 5-on-3 deficit, Elmira's Karl Linden capitalized with the game's first goal at 18:39.
Elmira held a 21-5 shots advantage in the period, but freshman Rich Drazin turned aside 20 shots to keep LVC in it.
The Soaring Eagles opened up the penalty-filled second half with Jan Velich's goal at 5:52, with Elmira coming on a counterrush following an expired LVC power play. Elmira padded its lead with Rusty Masters' power play goal at 9:27.
Following the goal, LVC was handed a golden opportunity with 1:03 of 5-on-3 hockey, but the Dutchmen never got a shot off before Anthony Ventura was called for a double-minor, giving LVC a 4-on-3. After both Elmira penalties expired, the Eagles converted their power play chance with Masters' goal at 13:29.
LVC kept attacking, but Surdam again missed a prime chance for the Dutchmen late in the period as he hit the pipe after Casey Mignone's centering feed. It was Elmira, however, that ended up with a late goal as Derrick Ryan beat Drazin on his right at 19:27.
But just as the period looked like it would play out, the Dutchmen finally punched through when Corey Lamoureux converted a feed from Mignone and Jarred Frey with just seven seconds left to make it a 5-1 game.
Elmira made it 6-1 to start the third period when an LVC player accidentally put the puck past Drazin. Stefan Schoen was given credit for the goal at 4:53. The Eagles made it 7-1 with a power-play goal at 12:59 when Rusty Masters slapped home Michael Richard's centering feed to complete his hat trick.
Russell Smith added an unassisted goal at 16:05 to cap the scoring.
Drazin went the distance for Lebanon Valley, making 44 saves. Casey Tuttle and Robert Kunka split time for Elmira, with Tuttle stopping 21 in 52:59 of work and Kunka making a save in clean-up duty.
LVC returns to home play next Saturday, taking on Neumann College at GIANT Center at 1:30 p.m.
