ANNVILLE, Pa. – Senior Erik Vargo won his seventh singles match in a row and the Lebanon Valley College men's tennis team defeated Elizabethtown College 7-2 in a Commonwealth Conference match Tuesday afternoon at the LVC Tennis Courts.
With the win, Lebanon Valley evened its Commonwealth Conference record at 2-2 while improving to 5-7 overall. Elizabethtown fell to 6-8 and 2-2 in conference play.
Lebanon Valley blitzed to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the three doubles matches, then claimed four of the six singles contests.
Vargo, the reigning Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week, won another convincing match at No. 1 singles, defeating Maarten Albers 6-1, 6-1. He is now 4-0 on the season in conference singles play.
Other singles winners were senior Stu Hartman (No. 2), freshman Matt Grodzinski (No. 4), and sophomore Jared Zeigler (No. 5). Grodzinski pushed his record to 11-4 on the season with his third straight win.
Hartman and Zeigler won at No. 1 doubles while junior Shawn Becker came out on top at No. 2 doubles, improving to 10-6. Freshman Jonathan Gingrich and Grodzinski earned a victory at No. 3 doubles as they bumped their record to 5-1 with their fourth consecutive win.
Lebanon Valley takes six days off before visiting Moravian College at 3:30 p.m. next Tuesday in another Commonwealth Conference match.
