ANNVILLE, Pa. – Moravian College pitchers threw a pair of one-hitters as the No. 5 Greyhounds swept Lebanon Valley in a Commonwealth Conference softball doubleheader, winning the first game 4-1 before taking the nightcap 4-0 Thursday afternoon at the LVC Softball Park.
Moravian (22-4, 10-0 CC), which entered the game on a seven-game shutout streak, received a complete game victory from Kristie Pellicanni in the opener before Maria DeBonis hurled a shutout in Game Two.
Senior Jenn Roberts started both games in the circle and was charged with both losses for Lebanon Valley (13-9, 4-4 CC).
DeBonis finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs to lead the Greyhounds offensively.
Moravian scored seven of its eight runs with two outs.
In the opener, Moravian scored two runs apiece in the fourth and sixth innings, plating all four of their runs with two outs, to build a 4-0 lead after five-and-a-half innings. DeBonis drilled a two-run home run to left-center in the fourth, and cleanup hitter Sheri Bienek ripped a two-run double over the centerfielder’s head in the sixth.
Pellicanni carried a no-hitter into the sixth, when freshman Krystal Devecchio led off with a walk. Two batters later, freshman Janey Kozlowski reached on an error, putting runners on second and third. Senior Amy Batz followed up with a towering double to the warning track in left, scoring Devecchio from third. Kozlowski was thrown out at the plate, and Pellicanni got out of the inning with a groundout.
Devecchio’s run marked the first time an opponent scored against Moravian since its 12-11, 11-inning loss at DeSales University on April 3 and snapped a 50-inning Greyhound scoreless inning streak.
Pellicanni (11-2) retired the side in order in the seventh. She finished with four strikeouts and three walks.
Roberts worked a complete game for Lebanon Valley, yielding six hits and two walks while fanning three. The two runs she surrendered in the sixth were unearned.
The Greyhounds assumed an early 3-0 lead in the second game, scoring three times on four hits in the top of the first against Roberts. Once again, Moravian came up big with two outs, with Bieniek ripping a run-scoring single and DeBonis smacking a two-run double.
DeBonis allowed her only hit in the third on a bloop single to left from junior Lauren Sanford. However, after Sanford’s hit, DeBonis retired 13 of the final 14 batters she faced, including nine in a row to end the game.
For the afternoon, DeBonis (11-2) struck out seven and walked three. Roberts (7-5) threw 4 1/3 innings and allowed four Moravian runs on seven hits and two walks. She struck out one.
Senior Nicolle Henry blanked Moravian over the final 2 2/3. She gave up only one hit and struck out one.
Lebanon Valley continues its Commonwealth Conference schedule on Saturday, when it hosts Juniata College starting at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
