ANNVILLE, Pa. – Moravian outscored Lebanon Valley 14-2 over the opening 3:30 of the second half, breaking open a close game en route to a 64-50 victory over Lebanon Valley in Commonwealth Conference women’s basketball action Wednesday evening at the LVC Gymnasium.
Moravian (12-10, 6-5 CC) was led by its frontcourt duo of Kelly Applegate and Jenny Hackleman, who combined for 31 points and 16 rebounds. Applegate scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds while Hackleman, who shot 8-for-8 at the foul line, notched 14 points and nine boards.
Senior forward Monica Johnson paced Lebanon Valley (7-14, 4-7 CC) with 17 points before fouling out with 5:37 left. Senior guard Allie Butler added 12 points while sophomore guard Amie Bickert grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Junior guard Donna Geiger tied a career-high with six assists.
With the loss, Lebanon Valley now finds itself locked in a four-way tie with Susquehanna, Juniata, and Elizabethtown for fourth place in the Commonwealth Conference standings and the final playoff spot that goes with it.
The Greyhounds led 28-25 at the half before its game-breaking run, which was capped by a pair of Hackleman foul shots that made it 42-27 with 16:30 left in the game. The Dutchmen were unable to reduce the deficit under 12 the rest of the way,
Moravian led for nearly the entire first half, and the Greyhounds pushed their advantage to as much as six on three occasions. A pair of Hackleman free throws with 6:02 on the clock made it 20-15, but that’s when the Valley used a 6-0 surge to take its first lead of the night. Freshman forward Cassie Moore tied it at 20-20 on a lay-up with 3:25 remaining in the opening half before Johnson put LVC on top 21-20 when she connected on 1-of-2 free throws with 2:53 to go.
The Greyhounds went back in front on a pair of Hackleman foul shots 15 seconds later, and Cody Fedorishen gave the visitors their three-point halftime lead when she dropped in a lay-up four seconds before the break.
Lebanon Valley returns to action on Saturday, when it visits Juniata College at 6 p.m. in another Commonwealth Conference contest.
