Comeback Falls Short As M. Basketball Falls to Moravian

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Moravian College took advantage of a cold-shooting second half by Lebanon Valley College, beating the Dutchmen, 67-60, Saturday at LVC Gymnasium.

The Dutchmen (3-5) mounted a late comeback charge against the Greyhounds (6-2), cutting a 13-point lead to just four, but Moravian took advantage of solid free throw shooting down to the stretch to hold on.

Sophomore Matt Staub delivered a career-high 17 points while junior Kyle Enoch added 11 - all in the second half - in the losing effort. Sophomore James Shinn added 10 points off the bench. Mark Franzyshen had a big game for Moravian, scoring 18 and pulling down six boards.

The game swung back and forth in the first half, with Moravian leading by as many as six before Staub's three-pointer with 4:14 to go gave LVC a one-point lead. Dan Hodge canned a three-ball of his own two minutes later to put the Dutchmen up four, and a Moravian lay-up made it a two-point game.

With 41 seconds left before the break, Hodge was hit with a technical foul, and Franzyshen made both foul shots to tie the game at 31, then made a layup to take the lead into the locker room.

The second half started with ice-cold shooting for the Dutchmen. After Staub's half-opening three-pointer, LVC failed to make a field goal again until Eric Humphrey's jumper with 12:56 remaining. In the meantime, the Greyhounds took advantage with a 42-36 lead, and built it up to a 13-point margin with 6:15 to go.

Lebanon Valley fought back, though, first with a jumper by Enoch and then a pair of foul shots by Dunkelberger to cut the lead to nine. Moravian's Chris Bays sank a shot to give Moravian an 11-point lead once again, but that sparked a 7-0 Dutchman run, starting with Humphrey's tip-in with 3:15 left and contiuing with Enoch's trey and another Humphrey shot to pull LVC within four with 1:54 left.

Staub had a chance to cut it to a point, but his three-pointer missed with 1:15 left, and Franzyshen responded with a layup to put the Greyhounds up six. Enoch's jumper with 42 seconds left made it a four-point game again, but by that time, the Dutchmen were forced to foul, and Moravian made five of six tries in the final 24 seconds to secure the win.

LVC will take some time off for finals before returning to action at King's Dec. 18 at 8 p.m.
