Men's Hoops Holds Off FDU-Florham, 75-66

Box Score

MADISON, N.J. - Sophomore James Shinn came off the bench to score 16 points and grab nine rebounds as Lebanon Valley College held off FDU-Florham, 75-66, in men's basketball action Saturday.

The Dutchmen (2-4) led the Devils (0-6) by as many as 19 in the second half, but resisted a furious FDU comeback attempt late in the half.

Junior Kyle Enoch added 16 points for LVC; Ryan McPherson led all players with 27 points for FDU-Florham. Shinn had an impressive game, shooting 9-of-12 from the floor to score 20 points in 29 minutes off the bench.

Once again, free-throw shooting was the key to LVC's success as they shot 26-of-32 (81.3 percent) from the line. The Dutchmen were clutch down the stretch from the stripe, including seven in a row by Matt Staub in the final two minutes.

The Devils opened up a seven-point lead after two minutes as Matt Kittner canned a pair of three-pointers to start the game. Head Coach Brad McAlester called timeout after Kittner's layup with 12:53 left made it 13-9 Devils; it turned out to be the right move as FDU-Florham would not score for the next six minutes while the Dutchmen went on a 17-0 tear.

The Dutchmen extended their lead further in the second half, going up by as many as 19 on three occasions. FDU chipped away at the lead, though, starting with a Jared Neff three-pointer with 13:40 that triggered a 12-2 Devils run and cut LVC's lead to six points.

Unlike Wednesday's loss at Alvernia College in which the Dutchmen lost a 14-point second half lead, LVC held on, responding with four straight foul shots by Dan Dunkelberger and Enoch to go back up by 10. The Dutchmen continued to make their free throws the rest of the way, going 12-for-16 in the final five minutes to earn the win.

LVC shot 44.2 percent overall compared to FDU's 48.9 percent, but capitalized on strong rebounding, winning the war on the boards 34-22. The Dutchmen pulled down 12 offensive rebounds.

Turnovers were also key, with Lebanon Valley scoring 30 points off 26 FDU-Florham turnovers.

Lebanon Valley returns home Tuesday night to host Delaware Valley College at 8 p.m.
