Men's Hoops Wins OT Thriller With F&M, 69-66

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. - There have been some classics in the 100-year history of the Lebanon Valley-Franklin & Marshall men's basketball rivalry.

The 2007 edition added another one to the books.

Junior Kyle Enoch drained a game-tying three-pointer with less than a second left to send the game to overtime, and senior Peter Ruth put the Dutchmen on top with a layup with 26 seconds left in OT as the Dutchmen (1-2) beat the Diplomats (1-2), 69-66, Tuesday night.

The two teams were marking the 100th anniversary of their rivalry, with the first LVC-F&M game taking place in 1907. It was the 142nd meeting overall and second win a row for LVC.

Lebanon Valley erased a 12-point deficit with 5:30 left in the second half to force the extra period. Freshman Anthony Trautman hit a pair of free throws with four seconds left in overtime to seal the win.

LVC was paced by Enoch's 18 points and a double-double of 14 points and 13 boards from Ruth. Foul shooting, which had plagued the Dutchmen over the weekend, was an asset, as LVC went 10-of-14 from the line.

F&M took a large lead to start the second half, and were up 11 when Derek Hines sank a layup with 9:26 to go. LVC cut it to six on a jumper and a free throw by James Shinn and Ruth's bucket with 7:05 to go, but the Dips hit four free throws to take a 12-point lead with 5:30 left.

Just when it seemed F&M would cruise to the win, LVC went on a 9-2 run over the next three minutes starting with Matt Staub's trey and ending with Enoch's jumper with 1:18 left to put the Dutchmen down three.

Chris Sullivan made one of his two free throws after an intentional foul with 19 seconds left in regulation, and Ruth grabbed the board. The Dutchmen ran down and Trautman made the layup to put LVC down by two.

With a chance to ice the game, F&M's Brandon Chasen only made one free throw after an intentional foul, and Enoch ran the court and sank a wide-open three-pointer as time expired to force overtime.

Overtime was just as dramatic, with Ruth putting LVC up two early before Hines' layup tied the game at 63 with 1:47 to go. Shinn sank a jumper with 1:15 to go, but Sullivan's three-ball at the other end gave the Dips a one-point lead with 51 seconds left.

On the next possession, however, Ruth grabbed the offensive board from Dan Hodge's missed shot and got the put-back, ultimately putting LVC up for good. Trautman's pair of foul shots put LVC up by three, and Sullivan's desperation three-pointer bounced off the iron at the buzzer.

The Dutchmen hit the road to face Ursinus College Sunday at 4 p.m.
