ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Lebanon Valley College ice hockey team brought the game within a goal twice in the third period, but Elmira held on to win, 4-2, in ECAC West action Friday night.
The Dutchmen (0-3, 0-1 ECAC West) stayed in the game until the end but the Soaring Eagles (2-0-1, 1-0 ECAC West) scored the eventual gamewinner at 9:10 of the third period.
Sophomore Aaron Miller was a major factor in keeping LVC in it as he made 38 saves while facing 42 shots.
Lebanon Valley scored first when Anthony Ventura found net at 11:44 of the first period on assists by Brad Surdam and Rob Scales.
The game stayed at 1-0 until the Eagles' Russell Smith scored on the power play at 14:48 of the second period.
Elmira quickly found the go-ahead goal 54 seconds into the third when Rick Schrank capitalized on Ray Nicks' roughing minor to score on the advantage.
Thinks got worse for the Dutchmen when Rusty Masters made it 3-1 for the Eagles at 9:10, but Elmira handed LVC a power play opportunity seconds later on Karl Linden's interference penalty.
Nicks made the most of the chance, taking Ventura's pass and blasting home LVC's second goal at 10:24 to put his team a goal down.
Elmira, however, ensured the win when Schrank netted his second with 3:55 left in the game.
Elmira outshot LVC 42-21 and was 2-for-8 on the power play as LVC took 11 penalties. Faceoffs played a key role as the Eagles won 56 of 76.
LVC will continue its upstate New York swing Saturday, heading to conference foe Hobart College at 4 p.m.
