Field Hockey Clinches CC Playoff Spot With Win At Albright

READING, Pa. - The No. 2 Lebanon Valley College field hockey team clinched a spot in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs Tuesday, overcoming a slow start to beat Albright College, 5-1.

With the win, the Flying Dutchmen (17-0, 3-0 Commonwealth) locked up their 14th-straight appearance in the MAC or Commonwealth tournament. They can secure the top seed with a win against Elizabethtown on Saturday.

The Commonwealth tournament will have a three-team format this season, with the top seed receiving a bye to, and the right to host, the championship game. In another key game on Tuesday afternoon, Messiah College beat Elizabethtown College, 3-2, in overtime, keeping both of those teams in the playoff hunt.

LVC got on the board quickly when senior Mimi Sullivan struck her 16th goal of the season only 2:29 into the game. Despite being outshot 14-3 in the first half, Albright managed to level the score in the 27th minute when Jennifer Martyn scored off Lindsay Neal's pass. The score would remain 1-1 into the break.

Lebanon Valley, however, showed why it is one of the top offensive teams in the nation and came roaring out of the half with four unanswered goals. Junior Alex Wolfe scored at 43:31, and before the Lions could even regroup, Sullivan notched her second goal 24 ticks later off Wolfe's pass.

The Dutchmen drew a penalty stroke in the 57th minute, which senior Christine Schairer converted, and freshman Rachel Pantalone scored her first career goal to cap the game in the 67th minute.

Albright goalkeeper Min-Hee Lee was fantastic, making 20 saves. LVC outshot the Lions 29-4 and held a 14-4 penalty corner advantage.

Sophomore Caitlin Baro earned the win, her 17th, but did not make a save.

LVC will try to close out its first undefeated regular season in program history, hosting Philadelphia Bible University on Thursday before entertaining Elizabethtown Saturday.
