Box Score

CHESTER, Pa. – Widener University broke the game open with an 18-1 run late in the first half as the Pride defeated Lebanon Valley 62-50 in a Commonwealth Conference women’s basketball game Tuesday evening at the Schwartz Center.

Lebanon Valley (6-12, 3-6 CC) received 14 points and eight rebounds from senior forward Monica Johnson while sophomore forward Megan Bish added 11 points for the Dutchmen.

Barbara Fleming tallied 14 points and was one of four players to reach double figures in scoring for Widener (8-12, 2-7 CC). Beth Dessart Mager added 13 points while Stephanie Bixby posted 11 points and 12 rebounds. Kelley Guarrera notched 10 point and eight boards.

Widener led 12-11 with 6:58 remaining in the opening half before their decisive run. The Pride’s lead reached double digits (22-12) on a Becky Tyler lay-up with 4:57 on the clock, and a Dessart Mager bucket made it 30-12 with 2:52 left before the intermission. Widener took a 21-point lead (35-14) into the locker room when Rayne Reber dropped in a pair of free throws with no time on the clock.

Lebanon Valley put together a rally midway through the second stanza, as a 10-0 run cut the deficit to 13 with 10:35 to go. Johnson scored seven points during the stretch, and her lay-up made it 43-30. However, a Fleming jumper ended the drought for Widener, and the Pride maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way.

The Dutchmen return to action on Thursday, when they host Dickinson College in a non-conference outing starting at 7:30 p.m.
