HERSHEY, Pa. – Nine different players scored a goal as No. 1-ranked Manhattanville College defeated Lebanon Valley 10-0 in ECAC West ice hockey action Friday evening at the Hersheypark Arena.
With the win, Manhattanville (14-0-3, 6-0-3 ECAC West) remained undefeated on the season.
Niklas Berntsson scored two goals and handed out one assist for the Valiants while Jason Murfitt distributed three assists. Andrew Gallant made 13 saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season.
Freshman goalie Aaron Miller finished with 56 saves for Lebanon Valley (2-18, 0-10 ECAC West), the second-most in school history and one shy of the school record set by Sonny Holding ’06 in a 4-1 loss to Utica last season.
The game marked just the third time in school history that Lebanon Valley played a No. 1-ranked team. The other two occurred when the Dutchmen faced off with RIT in the first round of the 2000-01 NCAA Division III playoffs.
Matt Piegza gave the Valiants all the scoring they would need when he took a cross from Zeke Hume and drilled in a shot from the left post with 10:36 left in the first period. Arlen Marshall added a power-play goal with 6:20 on the clock as the Manhattanville took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Miller turned aside 20 shots in the opening period, as the Valiants out-shot the Dutchmen 22-1.
Berntsson doubled Manhattanville’s lead over a four-and-a-half minute span early in the second stanza, rebounding in a power-play shot 1:51 into the period, then scoring again at the 6:25 mark.
AJ Mikkelsen pushed the Valiants’ lead to 5-0 at the second intermission when, with 3:28 left, he sent in a straightaway shot from just inside the blue line 30 seconds into a Manhattanville power-play.
The Valiants put the game away at the start of the third period, scoring four times over the opening 8:28. Dillon Henningson, Justin Rohr, Zeke Hume, and Chris Mills all deposited even-strength goals for Manhattanville during the span.
Mike Ruberto set the final score when he scored a short-handed goal with 4:04 left.
The two teams conclude their series on Saturday, when they meet back at the Hersheypark Arena at 3 p.m.
